Now you've got the right idea! Shoot, hunt with and compare the two side by side for 5 or 10 years before you commit to just one. 
After decades as a Ruger fan (and also a Savage fan!) I would say go with the Vanguard. I've only had a couple, have only one now, but the quality and value blows me away every time I shoot a Vanguard, especially the S2 with those nice new triggers. The newer Rugers....meh...

I took a ruger standard m77 7mm rem mag on a trade a little over a year ago. First time I shot it I was quite surprised although I quickly surmised after the 6th shot that it needed a recoil pad LOL
installed a limbsaver and went and shot it again. I'll never sell it now LOL
has served me extremely well this hunting season too
