The .250-300 would be ok...but really hard to find ammo for...and well hard to find any rifles chambered for it...they stopped producing them awhile back.

Actually the 22-250 ammo is really easy to find. You can buy it at Wal Mart or Canadian Tire here in Calgary/Airdrie. It isn't cheap though as has already been said.
I have more trouble finding .223 actually, because a lot of it is going overseas to the military boys in Iraq and Afghanistan. All the same there is still lots of .223 in the actual gun shops for cheap, and you can reload it easily like I do, because I like to shoot 60 grain hollow points instead of the little stuff you can usually buy. I just buy new for the brass.

I prefer 22-250 it doesn't cost much more to reload than the 223 and it seems brass is just as easy to find nowadays. 250-3000 would be a dandy deer rifle but I don't think its a good idea for vermin. Way too hard to find brass or factory loaded ammo especially when you're feeding it excessively in a good gopher patch. BTW if you're getting a 22-250 maybe look at something in a fluted bull bbl. My sporter weight heats up really hot after about 10 shots. And they can be a barrel burning bastard if you're shooting them hot all them time. I have a savage and when i do my part it will shoot 1/2 moa and on a few occasions i've got 1/4 moa

I'm all over the .223, but with that being said, I am trying to line up a Browning 22-250 heavy barrel. A lot of folks swear by the 17HMR, too. (I do not).

IMHO, when you approach the 6mm (.243) point, You have ventured beyond varmints into the realm of light kicking big game rifles. But hey, whatever gets ya hard, right?

I've tried 22 Hornet, 222, 222 Rem Mag. 223, 22-250, 243, 257 Roberts .264 Win Mag and .270 ... all as "Varmint" calibers. Settled on the 25-06.

For varminting up to yote size, I still prefer the 204. Virtually a ballistic twin to the 22-250 with less recoil, a 1/3 less powder (producing less heat), and such a treat in seeing your impacts through the scope.

If you like a little more punch, a Remington 700P in .308 Win is a good choice too. With Nosler J4 Comp and Varget powder you can do realy good group.

My buddy has the predator in .223 and it shoots the same as my Tikka T3 Varmint. I like it, but his bolt is nowhere near as smooth as the Tikka's.
We can hit dimes at 120 yards regularly... that's good enough for the girls I go out with and the critters I shoot.
Shooting my 75 gr HP hornadys at 200 yards I was astounded to find my my mildot adjustment was about a half to 3/4 of a mildot! Awesome!

I sure am delighted with my Remington "Light Tactical Rifle" (LTR) in .223...it has a heavy barrel, but it's only 20" long so it's not too heavy. An H-S Precision stock, and a great trigger. All in cool tactical matte black.

I have one of those LTR's, and it shoots great.
I've seen what the .204 Ruger can do,
and seen footage of what the 22-250 can do.
What do you want?
If you want to get those little buggers(gophers) out to 200yds
with some splat, then .223 is fun.
If you want ultimate splat, turn'em inside out launch, with the odd vaporization.
Then it's gotta go really fast, .204 Ruger or 22-250.

.223 is my choice, cheap easy to find brass ect, low recoil. getting into reloading for it for better groups

trouble is picking a rifle in it. kimber SVT looks interesting

You may wish to re-read the post you quoted. He was referring to .250 Savage (aka .250-3000 Savage) as being hard to find ammo for, not .22-250.
