Which is Better..MINI 30 or MINI 14 Rugger?

i've had both a mini 14 (mid 80's) and a mini 30 (early 90's) and both couldn't hit a barn door if i was inside the barn shooting at the door. the mini 14 wouldn't print on paper and couldn't consistently hit a 5 gallon pail at 100 yards so it was quickly sold. i then ended up getting a mini 30 for coyotes and kept missing them. took the gun to the range and at 100 yards, it sprayed bullets in a 2 foot by 2 foot square. both guns were crap!!

i don't know what the newer ones are like but if you do plan on getting a ruger mini 14 or 30, i'd suggest you go to the range to try it out before you actually purchase it.

I shot Mini-14 (new 580 model) last Saturday, 1"@50 yards consistently
with UMC ammo and 2-7 scope.

I don't know about the older Mini-14, never fired one.

I have had numerous mini 14's and 30's. I have had 14's that did not shoot so well and ones that did. I have had 30's that did not shoot well and one that was very accurate. That said, with good magazines, they are incredibly reliable. My newest mini 14 is of 2008 manufacture and has the heavier tappered barrel. With handloads, it will shoot moa. With surplus ball, it is 1.5-2" at 100 yards - even when warm. The new ones are noticibly better fit and finish and with much improved accuracy. They are still a little pricy. I also have a CZ858 with all the goodies on it I could find. For the price, the CZ is probably a better buy, and it will be much more effective in pi$$ing off liberals. Just my $.02. For a truck gun or a coyote gun for the snowmobile, quad, etc, it is hard to beat one of the new stainless minis in a good gunboot.

The new mini-14's are greatly improved over the old spaghetti style barrels. The new ones are thicker with a taper from the gas block forward. As well as Ruger retooled a few years back with improvments made end to end.

I'm still waiting for someone to explain why we're discussing the Mini-14 & Mini-30 in the Black Gun Forum? Shouldn't they more properly be discussed in the crappy hunting rifles forum?:) (referring to the Rugers, not the forum of course!):)

Just got out to the range, shooting my buddies 14, it was fine at 100 yards, not fantastic, but 3 or 4 inch groups.........which means zombie head shot each time, thats all you really need

both are crap

That tells me a lot. I have been stuck with crap before. I don't understand how a company can continue to sell what they themselves "know to be crap".

Reports of accuracy improvements after decades of sales do not impress me either. Shame, shame.

Because it sells, dummy.

People still buy it so they still sell it.

Obviously it does the job it was intended to, and well enough to keep selling in spite of internet #####ing.

What I don't understand is how you can be so stupid as to not realize that and still operate a computer.

You know, I'd like to hate Ruger for the Mini-14 that I previously owned and spent considerable time into trying to make a better shooter, but I really can't. The Mini-30 that I now own is reasonably accurate, far better than any SKS I have owned or shot. Nothing wrong with the CZ 858, well Ok yes there is that one nagging thing but, I have used buddies at the range and checked them out and they are good. Just not for me. I think that I will stick with my Mini-30.

mini's are a fun rifle. i have and have had a lot of these little fun guns. at 5rds the barrel woun't heat up as bad as if we could use 20-30s. as the little barrel heats up, your grouping will increase. i like both the 14 and 30, but as per a shooter the 30 ammo is a lot cheaper to buy. .223 is almost $13 for 20rds. my factory folder built in 1985 gets 1.5" at 100yrds. my 6.8spc shoots all over the board:(

just a note. the mini is a great little rifle, not a sharp shooter. there is a lot of add-ons and mods that can be made to them. me, most of mine are stock. as per sks and cz 858 i own them as well and love my cz and tula sks. stay cool and keep shootin'

No need to get personal. Anyone, including you, can buy the one they intended to sell me.
