K guys and gals i need some opinions. Waterfowl and upland game season is just around the corner and i still haven't bought myself a shotgun. It will be my first shotgun i own. So here goes. I am looking for a decent shotgun i am thinking a left handed 870 express or the Browning BPS hunter opinions please as i am running out of time fast
 
I shoot left as well and the BPS is nice because it ejects downwards but the other guys are right about the 870 for its toughness. I have found that the grip on the 870 is a bit too small for me though. I have larger hands and found that a fuller pistol grip was better for pointability. Bottom line -pick a gun that fits you the best and points the best for you. Why spend a few less dollars on a gun that doesn't fit and feel right. You'll end up shooting it way more because of the way it feels and fits rather than the price.
 
I am also a lefty and liked the browning best. In my opinion however the bps is an upland gun, in the duck blind I think the 870 stands up better.
 
Browning does offer quality firearms and the one thing going against that is the heavier weight compared to the 870 (personal opinion only) - even their 20ga Upland model weighs close to 7lbs.

Having said that, I did not find the balance awkward in any manner.

True. But then again for that matter, Pumps and Autos, to a great extent, are "pressed" into Upland use regardless of firearm configuration :)......not stepping on any toes here - merely stating Upland Hunting practises in NA :)

In response to the original question though - the Browning quality is far better compared to an 870 Express. However, it ought to be gun fit that must be considered first then followed by the available features.

Go with the 870. From experience it is a tough good quailty gun. I replaced mine with a Benelli and although it is a great gun I wish I had my 870 back.
 
I would get the 870. you can do far more with it as far as accessories go. You may not ever have the urge to go full tactical, but you could.
Also you can get rifled barrels and scope mounts for just about any kind of hunting you would ever want to do with a shotgun...
You can do that with the browning to, but I think there is a broader spectrum of after market gadgets for the remmy, and they will be less expensive too

thanks guys for all of your opinions. I still haven't made it to SIR to get a feel for the shotguns but i think eventually this week i will get there. I am leaning towards the 870 but it still depends which one fits better.
 
Save the 870 and the BPS for ducks and geese. Neither of these are a decent "upland gun" They are a little to heavy to be carring in the field all day long. Not to mention they are slow to shoulder and swing like bricks (ok for pass shooting). This gives you the excuse to buy another gun. ;)
 
do you mind buying used? want to save a few extra bucks? a good conditioned ithaca modle 37 can be had for anywhere from $150.00 to #300.00. ithaca made a fine shotgun and there is a pile of them still on the go today. they load and eject from the bottom like the bps. ofcourse you can't go wrong with either the bps or the 870. i have a 1975 ithaca 37 dove tail forend, deerslayer slug barrel, 29 " vent rib mod. barrel and two stocks, one shortened with pad , the other regular length, 13.75 " LOP. for $450.00 and i can't sell it.
