Hey guys, I am torn between AR15 and M1A/M14 type of rifles.

I like the look of AR15 little better than M1A and perhaps it is also little easier to handle as well. However, M1A does have its own appeal. I do not plan to hunt with either with them. It is for purely personal pleasure of shooting at ranges.

My biggest concern is maintenance aspect of two rifles.
Which is easier to clean and maintain?

I just don't want to spend 2 hours at the range and then having to spend another 2 hours just to clean the rifle every time I shoot.

Any suggestions or your personal experiences??

Thanks

My M14 is probably the easiest to maintain rifle I own. No crap in the chamber and rarely need to scrap any carbon off the piston. Just the occassional barrel cleaning and you're good to go. My AR15 is dirtier than most guns I've owned, but at least it's not a VZ58. That corrosive surplus gives me the willies and I always anally clean every nook and cranny in the receiver because of it. Mind you, I think cleaning the AR15 is kind of fun compared to most guns. I don't know why..

got both- not really that much difference- the main thing on the ar is the carbon due to the direct gas thing- doubt if i spend a half hour cleaning either- just use the special chamber brush for each if super dirty- come to think on it, my revolvers take the most time, maybe an hour- if you spend any more than that, 1 you are too fussy, or 2 you are not practised in taking your gun apart

The local gun shop clerk told me that every time you shoot AR-15 you "should" do a "military clean". This "military clean" can last up to 2 hours. If you are really used to it then may be 1 hour or little more.

Ar 15

I havent cleaned my colt car-15 in about 7 years - I just squirt some break free around the bolt now and then - still no stoppages

i was in the military, and a military clean still takes about 15 minutes to half an hour, incuding removing the buffer -which about 95% of us don't do- ye gods if it took 2 hours to clean our weapons, the enenmy would be all over us like a dirty shirt- we used to have to strip and re-assemble the fn in 15 minutes in the dark- that local gun shop clerk probably never even seen the inside of a barracks- take a look over at that other forum( the one that specialises in ar 15s) and see the steps on how to do it-
as to which is easier, i'd say the real test is the rounds between cleaning- the ar poops where it eats, which the 14/m1a does not- so you're supposedly going to get carbon build-up at the head of the bolt, if you do a lot of firing, and depending on how "dirty" your ammo is
actually an awful lot depends on how dirty your ammo is
regardless of which you choose, a phosphor bronze toothbrush( paint dept) is your friend- and for god's sake don't use it on your teeth

He gave you bad advice. I would say that a typical AR15 maintenance (after range use) cleaning should take about ~20 mins if you know what you're doing and you're really in no hurry. If you rush it, it can be done in 10 min (including prep and put away time).

I will just add my own voice the the majority. M1A/ M14 is cleaner. With that being said, if you insist on cleaning your AR every time you shoot, it is a 15 min job for a detailed/ inspection clean, 2 min job for a field clean.

if you want the m14s by norinco, the time to get them is NOW - the ar's- well there'll always be a few floating arond the e&e- and you can build your own- somebody's always wanting a different top or bottom- shorter, longer, or whatever- the 14s are going to be gone after this container load- then you'll have to either buy "used" off the e&e, or get one built
