which is more wind effected

hey, today i did some shooting in what would be called Windy conditions, to simulate the alpine high country where its seldom a still day, just to burn some powder an get some trigger time.

i shot the 130gr ppsn 30-06 against the 7mm08 with 162 SST.... specs below

30-06 130gr PPSN appx 2950-3000fps
7-08 162gr SST appx 2500 fps?max

fired from 200m , which is likely to drift more with a fairly good breeze 'angling away' or comin from over my right shoulder but up my back at same time....

or wouldnt there be much of a difference? :D
 
I would download the Bushnell Ballistics app and choose the DOA reticle (even if you don't own a Bushnell). Plug in the statistics of each cartridge, then select the environmental conditions and see the resulting wind drift. My bet is that both will be very close, with an edge to 7mm.
 
the 7mm bullet has a better BC, but it is slower to start with. Initially, over a given distance, the 7mm will drift more. But the .308 bullet will decelerate more quickly, because of its lower BC. Past a certain point, and to infinity, the 7mm bullet will drift less.

A Hornady .308/130 Spire Point at 3000 fps drifts 2" at 200 yards with a full value 10 mph cross wind, while the .284/162 gr SST at 2500 drifts 1.5". The difference in drift at 300 yards is much more pronounced being 7.5" for the .308/130 but only 4.7" for the .284/162 SST. A quartering 10 mph wind at 200m yards will drift the .308/130 1.6" at 200 yards and 5.2 at 300, and will drift the .284/162 1.1" at 200 yards and 3.3" at 300.
 
as a rule

the longer (time if flight)...... lower bc will drift more (less aerodynamic ) (Higher bc will drift less ) its a combination of factors

Thats sorta what i thought.......... but im not so sure now :)

at least today is a lot calmer day , see how today goes
