From the following list which one do you think is the best break open single shot rifle for centerfire. ( .308 type rounds )

a) NEF H@R
b) Mossberg
c) Baikal

all oppinions appreciated or any other suggestions

I have 2 NEF's they can have ejection problems. My 30-30 works flawlessly but my 30-06 can be troublesome. The ejection spring is weak on these rifles and brass gets stuck in the chamber, the only way to get it ou is to use a cleaning rod from the barrel and and pop it out. Normaly brass will get stuck if I use max loads or don't resize the case correctly. Mine needs a small base die to make sure the brass is small enough to keep it from getting stuck.

Personally, I'm not a fan of break-open single shots, so I haven't bothered to do the research or try one out. I like Falling-Block rifles like the Ruger #1.

I had the oportunity to examen the Baikal and was impressed at what you get for $275. I would choose the Baikal hands down.

I got a buddy that shoots a Ruger .300wm #1. He got it because it was the only thing he could afford that was left handed at the time, - this was years ago, now he wouldn't change it for the world and has become almost as fast as a bolt for a second shot if it was required.
For what it's worth I didn't like the recoil too much, kicked like my ex-wife.

But if thats out of the price range, my little Baikal in .222rem has proven to be quite a good shooter for the dollar.

NEF, I had a 243 that was OK but my 204 is great ( a 22 hornet and 30/30 ), I have 4 different bullets shooting ~.5" for 3 @ 100 best group is .39. Not bad for $350. Though in Canada a Stevens 200 my be the better buy, on account of no extra barrels shipped out of the US.

Although NEF limits their extra barrel fitting to U.S. customers, I think they could probably be persuaded to export a complete Handi-Rifle with more than one barrel from the start. But of course, that could take a while, and many people wouldn't want to wait, especially with Stevens 200s sitting on the shelves and asking so little.

For the money. Nef or H&R I've had a few of these. I wouldn't have a bad thing to say about the ones I've owned.

Dave.

For that kind of money i'd hire someone with a bolt gun to shoot it, another guy to butcher it, yet another to cook it and bring it to me and maybe even someone to chew it first.

They are pretty though

I wouldn't own any of them.

Save up a few more bucks and get a Ruger #1. Or a used 1885. Or a T/C Encore/Contender/TCR 83/TCR 87. Cheap rifles are cheap for a reason.
