Which Is The Best?

I want to get a 22LR to carry in my back pack when I am exploring trails riding my motorcycle or quad.
Just for gophers and plinking.
I want also want to install a small scope on it.
Which is the best? Marlin Papoose? Henry? Others?
I don't think a 10-22 with a folding stock would be short enough.
Needs to be about 16" long when collapsed.
Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

If you promise not to riot, I'll admit that I've had a decent time toting a Henry AR-7, simply because it's significantly less heavy than a traditional metal-and-wood setup.

The Henry, dissassembled, easily meets the 16"-17" specification you mention.

And, yes, I keep the receiver seperate and under a trigger-lock (instead of storing it alongside the barrel in the stock) whenever I go out and about.

Finally, the Henry AR-7's have a built-in scope rail, as oppose to the models by other manufacturers. This means that there is no warping of the barrel/receiver when a scope is mounted on the rail.

I'm thinking either the Henry AR-7 or the Marlin Papoose right now.
They seem to be the only two I have found that break down short enough.
Both of these guns look very similar.
Do you know if you can get aftermarket higher capacity clips for these?

I don't believe there are High Cap mags available for either of these guns listed.

Bottom ejection too, so its handy for lefties...but I just can't see a rifle that nice in a backpack. Fitted leather-bound luggage sure, but a knapsack? The Horror!

I picked up a Henry AR-7/survival rifle. Its "minute of pop-can," with its aperature sight and std. vel ammo, but a fun plinker.

You do know there is no legal requirment to lock your non restricteds during transport. Oh, and how long does it take to assemble once you decide to shoot?

They come with 8-round mags and 15-rd mags can be found in the US. You'd probably need Questar to import them for you.

And the 15rders wont fit in the stock when the rifle is stored.

"...Needs to be about 16" long when collapsed..." That'd make it prohibited. The 26" rule applies to .22's as well as centre fires. Dis-assembled isn't the same as 'collapsed'. And don't forget you must comply with the hunting regs too.

I was just going to say the same thing. It cannot be less than 66cm overall length when collapsed (folded or whatever).

As long as the firearm is incapable of firing it can be any length. It is considered disassembled and therefore inoperable.

Having handled both numerous times,in my opinion he marlin is best.

I have yet to be told that a Henry AR-7 is a prohibited firearm - the RCMP registration I received for mine certainly does not read that way...

The Marlin is higher in quality than the Henry.

Some AR-7 models were quite good. (EArmalite, Charter Arms, Survival Arms.) Barrels used to be metal. The Henry has an "improved" plastic pos barrel with a thin steel barrel liner. (Pick a pistol, any pistol, and I bet that it will beat the shootability of a plastic-barrelled Henry.) On the other hand, parts interchange and if you can get a good barrel the AR-7 is wicked (good).

Guys - I ended up buying a Marlin Papoose from Wholesale Sports (new in Kamloops).
Really nice little gun, shoots well.

Guys:

I think the Marlin Papoose is a really neat little rifle.
It's super portable and not a mickey mouse firearm.
I appreciate the quality and am searching for a scope to complement this mini rifle.
I will be packing it in my knap sack when trail riding on my dual sport motorcyle.
With gas prices so high this is the best way to explore the bush for fishing and hunting spots.
Now I'll be able to do some plinking and gopher hunting as well.
It really fits well.

Any comments on the best scope?
I'm thinking a variable would be best, probably in a compact scope format.

The simmons 3-9x32 22mag scope is a great scope if you can find one around. Another cheaper one would be the Bushnell 3-9x32. Both relitavely cheap and my simmons 3-9x32 has worked real well for me.
