Loading slugs into my shotshells using the pink wads. To get a proper crimp I have to put two cardboard shims in under the slug. Would like to get a longer wad to remove the shim issue, which is the next longest wad?
Please give us more details - what is a "pink" wad? There are lots of wad manufacturers out there, and several gauges of shotguns....
IF you are talking about 12 ga. winchester brand wads, you could subtitute the "gray" wads in your application, the cushion section is longer and the shot cup shorter with all else being the same.
Sorry, I was posting before coffee, 12ga with 1oz Lee slugs in Winchester high brass hulls. As for the pink wads I have, there is no name on them, but got them from Wholesales Sports.
I would only use data from a reliable source and use the exact components used in that data......by arbitrarily switching wads you can either get "off" sounding shots or higher pressure then the data suggests. This is a rule of thumb for reloading all shotshells, using a wad that takes up more room in the hull will raise chamber pressure. In addition some wads are made to fit in certain cases and not others ie: Tapered inside..... You therefore should also match the hull used in developing the data.
ben hunchak knows what he's talking about! For safety reasons you must follow the published shotshell reloading data for the slug load. Substituting components is just asking for trouble unless you really know what you are doing. I reload the 1oz Lee slugs using the data that calls for waa12 wads, winchester hulls, & 34gr of Herco powder. I have had no problems with crimping this load.
Colin, What load data are you using? The data that came with the Lee Slug mold? Winchester makes several different styles of hulls. I used the data sheet that came with the mold & it only specifies 2 powders; Herco & HS6 using waa12 & waa12f wads. Unique is NOT a listed powder.

Pink wads are usually associated with 1oz loads in target loading circles. If you want a wad with a smaller shotcup you need to find some Win gray coloured wads. These wads have a smaller shot cup for loading 7/8oz target loads. I have some of the Federal 7/8oz wads, how many are you looking for? FS
