OK guys which # of loctite is the best to use for mounting scope mounts.
I have access to all kinds of it but they are all high strength, now if the mounts were to be a perminent thing high strength would be ok.but you never know.I have been checking into this for a while and the only place that gives a # is A.R.M.S. and the don't give the number they just say the nsn number and I have been unable to convert this to something I can go to the hardware store and ask for. (loctite grade B (nsn 8030-00-081-2335) Any one got a good answer?

Loctite 242 is what is usually used for scope base screws, etc. It is the blue stuff that is non-permanent, removeable with normal hand tools.
Loctite 262 is the red stuff that is permanent, but can be removed with heat, and heavier hand tools.
These are the two used the most on guns in both my Weapons Shop (Military Maintenance Facility), and on my own guns. Hope this helps.

I'm looking for a locktite to help a threaded adapter stay put....

Thread is LH, Adapter converts it to RH thread for a brake. So you tighten one but end up loosening the other.

I'm a mechanic, and have lots of experience with loctite. Trust me, don't use red loctite on anything you plan on removing at some later date--- especially if it's a small fastener!
Blue is the way to go unless you're putting together a Harley. Use red on those bone shakers, nothing else will hold them together! LOL

Blue is for anti vibration, ive mixed it with red for scope bases and site bolts on guns with better results than just red or blue.

X2 proonur, as a mechanic aswell, I would recommened the blue. If you were talking about large bolts then red is fine and can be removed with a wrench and some elbow grease. But if you use red on those tiny little screws, there is a good chance that you will need heat to remove them, or risk twisting them off. Been there, done that:(

You really don't need any Loctite on a bolt action rifle... a tight scope mount screw won't work loose.

If you are set on using Loctite, the blue user removable is the one to use.

I agree. Unless it's a .50 cal. muzzleloader that takes 150 gr. pellet powder charge or a magnum rifle and they are shot a lot, i don't loctite anything either. If you have to use it, use the blue.If it was tightened properly i've never seen a scope work loose.

I agree dont use loctite on bolt action scope base screws. After you have bored out a few scope base screws with half of the head missing you will get the picture. Often people who use blue loctite turn the screws in so tight that they partially fracture the screw head, when some one goes to take the screw out half the head splits off. If you must put something on the screw threads use finger nail polish. Clean the screw holes with solvent to remove any oil,put finger nail polish on screw threads, and tighten screw firmly,do not over tighten. I have never had a scope base come loose and I have never broke off a screw when taking it out.

The recomended loctite for small fastners 1/4 and smaller is the purple loctite 222MS .

I've found spraying on some degreaser, such as birchwood caseys gunscrubber, seems to soften it up and the use the steel wool. That's with blue loctite.
