I am going shopping for a scope to do some longish (5-700yards) shooting with my Browning Eclipse .300wm.It should be
1. Light weight and compact enough so if I don't like the Browning it would'nt be out of place on an LTR.
2. Side focus would be nice
3. somewhere south of $800
I'm thinking of a Nikon 6-18X40.I dunno, what do you guys think?

I have a Nikon Monarch 4x12x40 and just bought a Burris 4.5x14 Fullfield 11. I had prev had a Burris FF11 3x9 and wasn't overly impressed, this one is excellent, very clear and concise adjustments, the big thing I like more than the Nikon is the eye relief is less critical. At 12x teh nikon must be positioned just so to see the whole field of view, the burris seems way less sensitive to eye position( and it was quite a bit cheaper). The only downside is the reticle is a bit thicker which wouldn't help on really long shots.

If you are shooting longer ranges mainly (no bush hunting), that power range sounds reasonable and gives you more versatility then the a lower powered variable. I tend to go with the variables that dip into the 24/25 power range and tend to have larger objectives....they are heavy.

At this stage of the game, I can't think of a better low priced scope then the Nikon Buckmaster line. I've had the 4.5-14 side focus mildot in stock and it they are nice scopes. We do have some 6-18 scopes coming in about a week.

I haven't looked at the Sightron 1" scopes with side focus but if you happen to have a dealer in your area you might want to look at them before you buy a Nikon. I would recommend staying away from their 30mm 6-24x50mm for the short term. The scope is due for an upgrade in the near future....but may be too heavy for your use anyway. The Sightron 24x and 36x scopes seem to work well for reference.

Try the Leupold VX-III LR SF 6.5-20X with either a fine reticle or varmint reticle. The standard reticle is too large for long range shooting. I find the Leupold LR series fits well with this type of shooting given it light weight and generous eye relief.

The price is around $1000 mark – a little more than your budget. However, it is better to spend a little extra and do it right for a long-term investment. Never settle for a second best.

Well I am not convinced on USO scopes. The one sample I had did nothing for me and only raised many questions with respect to quality etc. Granted this was observation of only one unit, but given the selling price, I won't be shopping USOPTICS any time soon. After that experience, my support for Nightforce increased significantly.

One of the best deals right now if you don't mind shopping in the US is the SWFAs "sample list" This is their demo stuff / close outs

They have a bunch of Leupold 3.5-10X40 M1 Long Range tactical with illuminated recticle for US$799 . They are all new in box . They also have M3 turret versions as well. If you are looking. Keep in mind that this same scope was selling at Wholesales for $1600

Optical clarity and the turrets are awesome on this scope . I also have S&B PMII and NF and this leupold is by far the best value . The illuminated recticle is nice for hunting

SWFA refuses to sell to Canadians.

Actually they refuse to SHIP to Canada. I have bought lots of scopes / spotters from SWFA . They know I'm Canadian because of the credit card billing address but they don't seem to care about that. They don't want the hassle of the export paperwork so they won't ship directly to Canada

You just need somewhere to send it in the US

I do that with Cabelas all the time. have a U.S. adress and your're all set;) If I were to purchase a Leupold scope I would surely shop in the U.S. Bizzare Canadian pricing being what it is for them:confused:
