Those are two different questions.

Not to give you a hard time, but for most folks even if they have the money, they don't have the freedom to own everything on your list. Maybe two polls would be preferable...One to see what folks own, then another to see which they think is the all around best.

Badly worded question. As suggested it would best be a two-part poll and you'd need multiple selections for the "what do you own" part.

I went with FN because I consider it to be the most reliable and therefore the best.

For ownership there should be a "More than one of the above" selection. I'm willing to bet that most of the nutz who own any of the 12(x) choices actually own several of them and judging by the popularity of the M14 I would guess that there are also more than a few multi owners of those out there.

FN L1A1 Aussie (C1A1gery), FN L1A1 UK, FN IA1 (16" para conversion), FN IA1 (C1A1gery), HK91, Norico M-14. I need to add a LWRC SABR (or two) to this list.

I have a FAL, M1 and M14. I voted M14 since it is by far the most accurate and fires a 7.62/308. I love the FN FAL, but I can't take it to the range (thanks to the f$%king lieberals) and is basically a safe queen. Also, the FN FAL can't hold a candle to the M14s in the accuracy department and is alsmost impossible to scope. The Garand is an excellent MBR which I would never sell either. However, the 8-round clip is a bit of a drawback as is the problem with scoping it.

Same here, except that I don't own a Garand.

I have VZ-52/57s, a VZ-858, an Egyptian Rashid. I'm not sure they're considered around here as genuine full-size battle rifles.
Anyway, I also have an Egyptian Hakim in great shape which is a very good shooter.
I wonder if I couldn't find a spare safety block array on top of which I could machine or braze a base for an adjustable peep sight.
Given the length, I'm pretty sure it would be a very easy and accurate rifle, if not somewhat cumbersome.
Bonus: the mod would be fully reversible by switching safety blocks.
PP.

The M14 is more accurate that the FN, but the question wasn't which is more accurate. As long as a battle rifle can hit a man at the max effective range for the caliber, it is accurate enough.

Scoping is not a consideration either as the question was not about DMR's or sniper rifles.

I own FN's and an M305 and my choice is the FN (even though my 305 is more accurate) :)

Smle I/iii

May not be semi, may not be pretty, but did the job for England and others for a LLLLLoooooonnnnnnngggg time. Will do a similar number on anything it hits to anything named, costs as little as $60 (around here anyways) and accurate as Hell. Not even the 'undervalued sks' can offer better bang for the buck.
(also holds 10 rounds unlike the pinned jobbies:evil:

If I had the option to be able to own and SHOOT one, it would be FN FAL hands down - She was my first, back when I played around with green clothes for the Queen in 1989, and she will be my only true love. The M14 is no doubt a decent enough rig, but it just "feels" wrong to me - YMMV.

As I am hampered by these silly laws, my stable of Lee Enfields will have to do as my battle rifles!

Cheers,

Neal

I'd vote for the FAL if I could own one. I love those old Congo folders.

Having said that, from a legal standpoint the Garand is the most effective battle rifle allowed in the country. Someone cited the 8rd clip as a drawback but I consider it to be it's biggest asset. No clumsy mag reloads, just pop in a fresh clip and you're ready to rock, plus it holds 8 instead of 5.

I own all of the rifles on the list except th FN. Had one but got rid of it as I didn't particularly like it (personal taste rather then an issue with the gun.)

I think the best one on the list is the AR 10. When it was originally designed, it as light years ahead of anything else being made. It was the parent of the AR 15/M16 style rifles that are so widespread today, both in the military and civilian markets. The design is also very adaptable, easily being convertable to other calibres.

The most accurate of the lot is easily the M 14.

I had to vote for the FN FAL, even though I have both an M1A & an M1 Garand. In a moment of complete stupidity I sold my L1A1, about 20 years ago and have regretted it ever since. My alternates are excellent choices also.
