Which milsurp fits these criteras?

Hi guys,
There's a fair probability that my girlfriend will come hunting with us in the next couple of years (when our son is old enough to come with us).

I want to slowly start looking for a rifle for her, and I thought about these criterias:
1) Large ring milsurp mauser (98?)
2) hinged floorplate
3) bent bolt for scope clearance
4) drilled and tapped for weaver bases
5) 6.5x55mm caliber

What rifle could fit the bill? Are there any M98 in 6.5x55 or were there only M96 made in that caliber?

Cheers,

Fish

PS: I'll probably try to do a custom stock for her (pink camo? hehe), so the stock/fit isn't an issue.

How about buy a new hunting rifle and leave the milsurps un molested.

But if you are hell bent on using a milsurp, buy something that has already been ruined like a un-restorable sporterized Lee Enfield.

i think an m38 swede would be better
its got the turned down handle and they cut some of the length out of the 96's

Ohh, those are nice indeed! I checked tradeEx and they don't carry any. Is there another sponsor that carries them? I want to get an idea of the price range...

EDIT: Oh, and do m38's usually take stripper clips? That would be awesome.

The M38 pictured is not a M98 action - it's a small ring M96. To drill and tap, add scope bases and modify the safety will require gunsmith costs and greatly reduce its value if it was otherwise on original military configuration.

Tradex has several Husqvarna 1600's in 6.5x55, practically ready to just add a scope and take hunting. It is a M98 (albeit small ring) to boot.

I have to admit, I'm not all that knowledgeable about milsurps (obviously! hehe).

What's the difference between an M38 and an M96? Both are small ring, right?

Am-I correct in thinking that Husqvarna's 1600 are commercial versions of the m96 (m38?) action?

Also, I'm curious why you'd need to modify the safety? My m96 sporter has a little lever like safety, which I love. I know that it would take one hell of a branch to snag onto it and remove the safety while walking in the woods.

Thanks Andy!

But i've got a swede mauser with a bent bolt and i think it's already tapped and drilled.

send me a pm with your email address and i will send you some pictures.

The m38 and m96 are the same action - small ring m96. The Husky 1600 is a commercial design, but is not based on the m96 (so to be fair it does not meet your desire for a milsurp action). It's similar in that it's a small ring, but is a m98 whose most notable difference is an additional (I think unnecessary) locking lug on the bolt.

The wing safety will interfere with the scope you mount unless you use (ridiculous) super high see through rings.

Keep in mind that lots of swedes in 6.5x55 were bubba'd in the past. You'll save yourself money by buying one already cut up and altered, than putting the money down for a nice original then permanently altering it and cutting its value.

Nothing wrong with enfields either. Last I checked there was a nice No1 Mk3 in the EE for $110.

They will generally take stripper clips up until a bubba puts a scope on them. :D

But seriously 6.5x55 is a great cartridge choice.

Hahaha Touché.

A scope would hinder stripper clip use. It would of been fun, but oh well...

From what I can see, I'll probably go with a husky 1600.

Cheers everyone!

+1 on having a look at Tradex's site under the Hunting and Sporting Rifles category.

Also, keep in mind that most military Mauser actions don't have a button floorplate release; you need to use a bullet tip or a punch of to release it. The only military Mauser action that I can think of with a button floorplate latch is the Argentine 1909 Mauser.

I was going to say a Swedish M96 but everyone beat me to it. Don't you have to be careful when loading ammo for Swedish rifles as the tolerance is marginal (I don't have a M96 but I heard the rumor floating around) or is this for the Swiss rifles ?

The Swiss K31s are fairly notorious for having short throats, making them quite sensitive to OAL, especially with bullets with a long ogive.

No one has asked him how strong his girl friend is. Is she tough enough to shoot and carry a full sized, battle ready milsurp?
Sporters are a lot lighter and in the end, cheaper. I'm not saying that there aren't some nice rifles built on cut down milsurps but you must consider the logistics here. Your girl friend might carry junior around easily but she will be transferring a lot of the weight to her body. The rifle will be held in her hands on extended arms. A whole different scenario. You may want to consider something more modern, like a Tikka T3 or one of the youth models being made by domestic manufacturers. There are many such used rifles around and one could easily be found at an affordable price on the CGN EE.

SKS all the way. thats what i used to get the daughter started out with..semi auto just has way less recoil to start with..the price is super affordable and it performs allmost as good as a 308..just a bit slower speeds thats all
