I know nil about 1911's but want to get into one soon to add to the growing handgun collection.
Armco has 1911 A1's and Commanders - what's the difference?
I'm a lefty with small hands, any differences that would matter and what mods would one suggest for grips and safety to best accomodate me?
Thanks.

commander vs government

Both are the same size in the grip.

The 'commander' has a 4 1/4" barrel, hence shorter slide, and the front dust cover of the frame is about 3/4" shorter than the 'government' model has the 5" barrel.

It boils down to personal preference. Normally, I prefer full length 1911's but I have a Norc compact .45ACP and a Colt Combat Commander 9mm & love 'em both.

I'm also a lefty but my hands aren't small.

Go with the POLICE model. Much nicer fit and finish then the norcs of the past. If you are buying a 1911 go with the mil spec .45acp. Anything else is not really a 1911. The extra features on the police model are nice. But any parts you wanna put on it will work as rhey are standard 1911 specs. Not like some of the 9mm versions.

Either one of the Norinco's are nice. Totally machined no NIM and very accurate. 9mm or 45, 45 brass and ammo are more expensive. Good luck choosing. I like the 45 cal ACP.

If you have small hands, the flat mainspring housing would be probably be better than the arched one. You can also get special grip screw bushings to take slimmer grips.

I agree, a flat mainspring housing combined with a 'short' trigger seem to make the 1911 grip more manageable for hands on the smaller side.

I agree, a flat mainspring housing

Can you provide examples of 1911s with and without the flat mainspring housing? This has perked my interest.

IRON GLOVE:

Try to hold one in your hand before commiting. I have made this fatal mistake twice now. First time with an NP-28 and then again with an NP-22 (which I thought was smaller). Both are way too big for my small mits.

Thanks Wendell!

If I could get a post 1924 with the pre 1924 trigger exposure and main spring housing, I think I would be a happy camper!

The arched mainspring housing was added as they found it improved the "pointability" and reduced the tendency to shoot the pistol low. As with all things though it often depends on the user and their experience which works best for them.
