Looking to buy a head mountable (no hands) 1x magnification night vision monocular for woods walking/camping. I can't afford gen 2+ or gen 3 etc. but real pvs-14 would be awesome IF I had the cash.

I'm wondering if anyone has gone through the buying process/tried any out. I'm actually wondering if the cheap chinese pvs-14 digital clone would be ok with a decent IR light? Also looking at the spark core. Anything else I should look at?

Thx!

If it's under $1000, you're best bet is the Spark core. But even then, they're not stellar (heh)

What is it you're looking to do? Do you need to move in the dark? Shoot in the dark? Both?

Just moving, not shooting. I'd like to see animals in the woods. See what's crashing through the underbrush (moose vs bear). It's be nice to be able to see better to get to fishing spots through the woods at night as well.

To be honest for what you are looking for and your budget sounds like you would be better served buying a good flashlight

Yeah, that was helpful Shawn. Thanks for your prophetic insight.

What's the next step up from the spark? Gen 2 doesn't seem much better than the spark, and Gen 3 is a fortune, any good deals around for gen 3? (Yes I realize that that would be over 1k)

Thermal is interesting, but I can't seem to find anything that's similar to the pvs-14 size wise, that's not astronomically priced.

I don't mean this rudely, but Shawn is absolutely correct unless you wish to be undetected.

A good flashlight from a quality brand like Surefire will let you see more than Gen 3 NV at half of your budget.

Thermal is good for spotting.

Agreed. By the description you gave: seeing animals, seeing paths, etc., you are better off with a good quality flashlight.

If you must go Gen 1 night vision, the Spark is the way to go. But you will likely be happier with a flashlight for your given purposes.

I have owned every generation of NV made.

Shawn is bang on. Less than Gen 2 is a waste of money.

A really GOOD flashlight with a red lens, so the light doesn't affect your night vision.

And appearantly animals can't see the red light, or something like that. Whichever way, it doesn't affect them as much as a regular white light does.
