Which of the 3 rounds for your SHTF rifle

Here's my 3 choices, and the rifles for them:

G3 with scope mounted
7.62X51

AR15 14.5" or 16.1" with ELCAN & Tact light
5.56

MINI-UZI + M9 Pistol, that way I can use the same ammo.
9MM

I am torn between calibers

The 303 would probably be the best choice so far up north in the Yukon simply because I have yet to meet someone that doesn't own an Enfield. The Rangers up here have surplus amounts of ammunition in 400 round ammo boxes...and they have lots of the boxes.

The 7.62x39 would be useful for both hunting of caribou moose deer etc and it makes a semi useful defensive round for bears...but only in greater capacities.

The .223 is the best defense-against-humans round I can think of simply because it does the job and still retains a lightweight-factor for carrying uber amounts of 'mo

The 30-30 is also good simply because of how common it is...not as common up here as a 303, but still a close second. A lever action is faster in some cases that a bolt action and is still as quick as a pump.

The 12ga is useful for defense against humans bears and mooses...as well as a good hunting gun for ducks, geese, grouse, and big game too with slugs.

The 22LR may be lightwieght and common as hell but for the benefits seldom seen out of a rifle barrel, one can still get nearly as close with a pistol...in this calibre I would stick to a small pistol for small game and personal engagements...otherwise use a 45.

Peckerwood beat me to the 303 as it is still really popular and every gas station
and old person in sask has one. It is also a very fast bolt gun, with practice as fast as a pump shotie. The only other rifle I want is the springfield pilots survival
rifle with 22lr and 410 shotgun barrel for hunting. Trapping is probably a better way of gathering food though.

When the s**t hit the fan, you will either:

a) shot in the first 30 second of the episode
b) eaten alive by zombies
c)swallowed by the earthquake/hurricane/volcano.
Ahhhh...I love multiple choice questions...however this one is more of a trick question I think. Yup...it's a trick question...the answers are actually multiple consecutive scenarios...first you get shot within 30 seconds...then whilst dying you get finished off by zombies who eat you while still relatively alive...then in comes a series of natural disasters to finish you off.

Did I get it right?

:D

All this replies regarding zombies made me feel to read the book Zombie Survival Guide :runaway: and yes, the book does recommend the .22 because of its availability and price :D

My choice:
.22
7.62x39

Don't forget body armour and machete's for when it gets down to close combat.
There are some nice zombie defence gear on the edged weapons forum strider axe pics thread right now.

What you want for SHTF depends on whether you will stockpile your own ammo
then 7.62/39 or7.62/54 is a good choice. If you will have a smaller amunt of ammo and plan to buy or scavenge then rounds like 22 or 303 are a good choice. I would love to be able to cast and reload my own shells. If you can do that all you need is brass, powder, primers and lead.

but as long as you have some ammo and a little skill you can always trade up :D

I will stick to something that has some reach out and touch capability

Promise to fire a warning shot first... an ally might be better to have to help carry all that gun stuff :runaway:

My choice would be .223 and a 1:9 twist barrel so you can basically pick up and fire any .223 cartidge in North America.

7.63x39 any of the ak family and ive lots of it anda few mags
i do have approx 2K of .223 but ive 3.5K + of 7.62x39

followed by 7.62x25 (can use the ppsh41 with its 71 rnd drum and high rate of fire(if i had a ppsh) and my tokarov pistol)

9mm good for my glock17 and my colt 9mm smg

The key is to stock up NOW on your prefered cartridge of choice. For me thats .308 for a rifle and 45 ACP for a pistol. (Of course it doesnt hurt to stock up on other calibers too) If you stock up now, you won't be in such a rush to find some ammo when TSHTF.

ammo

I have plenty of 7.62x51 & 7.62x39 - so whatever happens, I have enough of the 7.62 stuff to feed the CZ and M305 to do whatever job I need.

I am all out of 223 and will need to be getting some here soon.

I am a mini-14 guy. My OPP GB is a 1:9 and my SS FF is 1:10.... Damn you Ruger..... :) beauty is that the Mini will eat anything you put into it. People always ##### about the Mini but alot of people get CHEEP ammo and well - get CHEEP results. Also, retorque your gas port and do it evenly so there is not one side tighter than another. I'll stop my rant......

All I need is .223
