I'm thinking about getting a new toy. I've been looking at the Remington 597 or Ruger 10/22. Which one is the better bang for the buck?

What do you wanna do with your .22

For out of the box accuracy the 597. For adding on aftermarket parts the 10/22.
If it is for hunting probably the 597, but if you wanna modify latter on the 10-22 is the best bet, quick change barrels, and a load of gadgets that you can add. If I was to buy another .22 it would defenitely be the 10-22 because I don't know what I'll wanna do in a few years with my .22:rockOn:

Exatcly what gravyboat said. The 597 is a very accurate auto. The 10/22 has the aftermarket support going for it, but as it stands, sprays bullets all over the place. I'm not much for aftermarket accsesories, so the 597 gets my vote there. Unfortunatly, out of the box, they are known fo having feeding issues.

Fit

I am fairly tall (6'5") and found that a stock 10-22 felt really tiny. Sorta like a youth gun. I bought the 597 and really like it. I think ruger will lose a bit of market share to the 597.

I had the same dilemma and went with the 10/22. I wasn't looking for accuracy (ill leave that to my Toz-78), I just wanted to spray cheap rounds all over and I can do that with a 10/22 and hi-cap mags ;)

597 - Why?
> Out of the box, it is less expensive compare to 10/22.
> Out of the box accuracy.
> 597 after-market parts and accessories are now gradually emerging. Soon there will be plenty of those parts to dress up your 597.

If you can buy a brand new 10/22 for under $200.00. Go for 10/22, ELSE I'd highly recommend a 597.
You can not go wrong with a brand new semi auto rifle as accurate as 597 at a price of $170.00.

Most of the feeding issues have been cleared up with the newer 3rd generation mags, keep it clean and don't overtighten the guide rod screws as well as using dri-lube and they work fine. Got the 597 LSS with scope from S.I.R. back in september 06 and I'm happy with it. Just got the K10/22 on saturday at wholsale sports, feels pretty good to hold, clean lines, the mag seems beefier then the 597.Problem is I'm a city dweller and werkin' evenings right now so I probably won't get out to try it for sometime.

10/22T which one, blued or stainless, I've heard the internal parts are much better then the other models but are interchangable.

10/22 for me. Fun to build and play with. Out of the box accuracy is usually quite good.

The 597 will never have the aftermarket goodies that the 10/22 has. The only people who say they will are 597 owners who are dreaming of aftermarket parts.

You obviously don't understand marketing. I have no doubt that as the 597 rifle gets more popular stuff will be made for it. :D

Consider how many years/decades the 10/22 sat on the shelves, and in peoples gun safes in "out of the box" condition, all these mods for the 10/22 are a recent thing.

And as always it will come down to cost, and comparisons at the local range or gravel pit, when Billy looks over to see His friend out shooting him with a rifle that cost hundreds less then what he paid for his...the market will shift.

The only reason I'd consider the 597 over the Ruger is for the .17HMR. A semi auto .17HMR out of the box. That's a nice set up.
