Which one, 10/22 or 597?

I have a 597 LS HB in 22 LR and I love it. It's a beautiful rifle for the price, way cheaper than a 10-22, and the last shot hold open is a real bonus. With regards to feeding issues, just roll an allen key between your index finger and thumb and that's all the tension you need. I've only ever used the third generation mags, but feeding has never been an issue with my gun, although I have seen a lot of 10-22's jaming, especially with extended mags

And as always it will come down to cost, and comparisons at the local range or gravel pit, when Billy looks over to see His friend out shooting him with a rifle that cost hundreds less then what he paid for his...the market will shift.

I don't know how any body got a 10/22. I called both SIR and Wholesale at the end of Feb. and both said they were on back order, so I bought a Marlin 60 in camo.

I have had a 10/22 for 13 years now and have never had anyproblems killing gophers. I believe that the 10/22 rifle straight out of the box can shoot better than the person pulling the trigger.
Accuracy has never been a problem with mine.
I would have to say it is a comfort choice.

I've shot both and I bought the ruger. The reason was simple for me.
First off it's simple to strip and maintain. One screw holds the stock on and then the rest can be removed with no tools. Can the same be said of the 597?
It's reliable. I always use quality ammo. So far in the last two months and 1500 rounds it hasn't failed once. The 597 I tried couldn't cycle 100 rounds without a failure. There is no comparison between the rotary mag in the ruger and the pot metal mag in the 597.
Out of the box it was accurate. So was the 597. Kind of a draw here out of the box.

...another satisfied 597 owner here. A couple of very minor tweaks and it's been smooth sailing ever since. As for "dreaming" of aftermarket parts, a quick visit to either jarvis or volquartsen will prove that there are parts out there. Dunno maybe the 10/22 needs all the aftermarket goodies to make it as accurate as an out of the box 597???

Yup, the weaknesses are the no last shot bolt hold open, and also the mediocre mag release button.
The rotary mag, and flush magazine to the stock are nice features. Looks good and makes it very easy to balance the rifle when shooting off hand.
