Which one for you???

I've used the SKS rifles quite a bit; I bought 5 of them from Lever when they were $70. One I tortured tested wiht a crate (1500 rounds) of ammo, during which I didn't clean or maintain the rifle.

It still went bang every time.

In fact, for the most part, with a little bit of maintenence, SKS rifles are pretty reliable, and The thousands of Canadians who use them, seem to agree.

Now, the 710, who knows? I've seen at least 2 that malfunctioned right out of the box! And there hae been plenty of othe rreports about htese guns malfunctioning.

Failure to cahmber facotry ammo, bolt seizing p wiht facotry ammo, bolt handles falling off, bolts comeing right out when they aren't supposed to...

The SKS is moslty known as a reliable carbine with good enough accuracy to kill a deer at 150 yards, like many iron sighted carbines.

The 710 is mostly known as an accurate rifle that you have no idea if it is going ot go bnag, or you will be able to eject your case and load another shell, or if th ebolt handle will fall off..

I guess reliabilty is more important to some than others. :runaway:

Sks

Don't own an SKS & never owned one. But I'd still take one over a POS Rem 710 any day of the week. And by my math I could also get a case of ammo to go with the SKS for the price of a 710... :p

When the 710 first came out, my B.I.L.'s Dad got one for a truck gun instead of beating up his Husky 4000. He has a buggered up shoulder so Eric and I went with him to sight it in for him. He did the final shooting to confirm it was hitting for him too.
Well the rifle is so cheezy it almost smells like parmesean and it is just as ugly as its smell. It shot okay, nothing more, nothing less.

I'd still rather get a scratch in my Husky than pack that, but I guess alot of people aren't looking for pretty, just functional. (sigh, boy are they missing out!)

Gatehouse, has there been a recall on certain 710's? This sounds like alot of grief they are having.

I hope my slingshot will have the arm brace! lol

Ah, come on now....I know you have a couple of 303's kickin' around.:D
You must be doin' something with all that Linseed Oil......:)
Guilty as charged.:D I've got a No4Mk1 kicking around here somewhere.:p
I haven't ever shot it, but I do own one.

I also had a buddies SKS here for a bit.:(

I sold my 710 a year ago,It had to be the biggest P.O.S. I have ever owned in my life.I have seen many times that guys would post range reports, but instead of using a quarter to give others a better idea of the group I would have to use a pie plate. The bolt would jam and it was only a 30-06 and it kicked like a mule.I can only imagine what the 300wm in a 710 is like.:runaway: :runaway:

Our friends across the border have killed enough deer with all kinds of SKS, Yugo or Norinco.

Here is another guy's review on his Norinco SKS:

"This is my 1st year hunting and it took me this long to get my 1st deer. I used my Norinco bubba link

I shot him at 70 yards with 150 grain COR-BON ammo at 7:15am on public land. Complete pass though double lung shot, and the exit wound was the size of a quarter.

It took me and my friend 1 1/2 hours to drag him 2 miles out of the woods. He is a 2 1/2 year old 6 pointer and field dressed at 80 pounds. Not a big deer but good for north Georgia WMAs.

My Norinco has turned out to be a great brush gun for steep foot hills of north west georgia. The max line of sight I could posibly get would be 150 yards anyway. I have used it more than once as a shield\club to push through briars and thickets. Tossed it to the other side of a creek more than once so I could jump across. It takes the kind of punishment an $800 Remington 700 never would, and still shoots like a champ. I love my baby.."

Here's another one:

"I've used my norinco sks for hunting muley's for the past 5 yrs, i love it! this is one of my pride and joys, dropped him right in his tracks at about 110 yards."

You can hate SKS and bash it to death but you can't ignore the fact that SKS can do a job as fine as what a 30-30 does. And no SKS owner has ever claimed that SKS is the best gun in the world. Simple as that.

I owne an SKS and no 710!

Buddy of mine has one and he did send it in for the recall. I believe it had to do with the safety. Besides the scope not being bore-sighted like Remington states, he never has had any problems with it. He did install a R3 butt pad on it cause the kick of that little .270 win. was vicious!

Same buddys b.i.l. also bought a 710, and when he took it out of the box, it was rusted from head to toe...

People can argue over Yugo SKS' and Norc SKS' and whatever....one that I'll let them debate as I don't have that much experience to nitpick over things....

However, a SKS(Norc) can be had for cheap, it'll work at the best of times(good hunting above boys!) and the worst of times. For the price of that built-to-the-standard-of-a-cap-gun 710, you can pick up a SKS, a crate or two of ammo and just about another SKS in case the first one breaks or to use as firewood and a marshmellow stick(but please remember ACTS hehe :) )
