Handloader with good vision, 30-06 calibre Garand.
Non-handloader that prefers optics, the M-14 copy gets the nod.
Certainly one could get a scout scope mount for the M1 for sure, but there's alot more scope mounts for the M14 design IMO.

Over the years I've owned and competed with a TRW M14, a Springfield Armoury Inc M1A(NM) and 2x Springfield Armoury WW2 M1 Garands. For long range accuracy the M1A can't be beat and the TRW M14 was just as accurate (back when you could still take them to the range). For 5 years I used an M1 Garand for 3 gun matches with good results. If you think out your load it is not hard to stay within the top third of the competitors. The key is to practice your reloads. I still have a Garand but the M14 & M1A(NM) are long gone as I changed shooting disciplines and no long shoot long range matches. That is unless I'm using a .45-70 Shilo Sharps #3 Sporting Rifle.

Personally I own both. A 1941 Springfield M1 Garand and a 2009 Norinco M14. If I had to give one up for adoption I think it would be the M14. The garand is a very fun rifle to own and shoot. Also as Jwirecom109 said they can legally hold 8 rounds. There are a lot more options as far as aftermarket parts for the m14, for a scope mount I would recommend the CASM mount from m14.ca. They also do make one that will work on the garand, only really mount a red dot on it though due to size of the mount. Its really going to be up to personal preference if price isnt an issue. If you want something thats going to be left stock I would say the M1. But if you want something to be tacticool then the m14 would be a beter choice in my opinion.
