just these two caliber not 22mag, not 17mh2

I know they were designed differently. but if you only shoot targets; same rifle, same quality, same barrel...etc. which one should have tighter groups?

thanks

my guess would be 17hmr mine is so accurate i sometimes wait till the gopher's mouth is open and feed it to him

As far as the calibers themselves go...Within the range limits of the .22, either one could be equally as accurate.

but if you only shoot targets; same rifle, same quality, same barrel...etc.
You aren't likely to get the same level of accuracy from each caliber in the same model of gun. One model may be much more accurate in .17 over the .22, or vice-versa. It depends on what the gun likes, not which caliber it uses.

My target .22's are more accurate then my .17's. Then again, I spent about 5 times as much on my .22's.

what is your 22lr and 17?

and how much more accurate?

thx

Forget about judging by accuracy...you're comparing apples to apples. As an example...Anschutz makes some of the most accurate .22s in the world, but some Savage/Marlin .17s shoot just as well.

Rather that judging by accuracy, go by range. The .17 is good for about twice the distance of a .22.

The 17, mainly because the 22 mag suffers from a crimped lead bullet with a heel, and the 17 has a jacketed bullet.

the WMR's not heeled.

Fact is, the 17's are loaded with better bullets overall. Premium jacketed jobbies. There aren't many WMR 'accuracy loads' out there.

I'm not a believer in 'inherent accuracy' but it's hard to argue with the amazing groups the 17's are capable of out of the box.

What i meant was the lead bullet is crimped like a heeled bullet, which is the toughest part of trying to make rimfire ammo with lead bullets accurate.

.17HMR is more accurate than .22LR. Period.
I have always shot rimfire pretty much exclusively. I have spent many years and many dollars probing the practical accuracy limits of the .22LR round. I bought and tweaked and modified dozens of .22LR rifles, including most of the rifles reputed to be the most accurate ever made and some very fine custom bencrest rifles. I built rail guns and used complex mechanical rests. I fired hundreds of thousands of rounds. I tested different lots of the most expensive match ammo to find out which lot worked best in which gun under which conditions.Through a long, complicated process I was able to coax some impressive results from the .22LR Then I bought an ordinary production .17hmr and immediately outshot my alltime best results ever with a .22lr. I did so at 25, 50, and 100 yards. First day, no adjustments, no testing, first box of ammo. I have since sold most of my .22lr rifles

I have a couple, but my main is...

.22lr: Winchester 52D custom

.17HMR: Marlin 917:

How much more?? At 25 a lot, at 50 bit, and at 100 just barely.

Not bad for a $200 OOTB Marlin eh.;) And I bet it kicks the 22's butt at 125 +.:)

Throw in a little wind and the .17 will fall far short of the .22 in performance, and accuracy.

Apparently not...

The claim that ".22 ammo(Match) is the most accurate factory ammo you can buy" was orig. made by Steve Garbe, probably the most knowledgeable rifleman around, Multi time BPCR World Champ, most decorated Schuetzen competitor, NRA BPCR Champ, 2006 .22 Benchrest champ NRA (Raton), former owner Ballard Rifle Co., Publisher "Black Powder Cartridge News", when Steve says something he can back it up, so put the .17s away boys, unless you want to ante up some coin, for a friendly side match with Steve, I'll hold the bets.

Yup :D, not bad at all ;)

Not to mention that my .22's are all pillar and glass beded, the actions have been trued, I have mega time and effor into them, I have tested all sorts of ammo, and have benchrest stocks for them.

My .17 has a sporter stock, has not been tuned, and I have a crappy scope on it. But overall, I have to admit, I do like my .22's, Maybe because of ammo costs.

Garbe's email is spg@cody.wtp.net
Care to ask him straight out if he feels .22LR is more accurate than .17hmr?
