With the choices you have there the 870 is the better pump gun with it being your decision if you need the magnum. I've never had any use for the Mossbergs but each to their own.

Agreed that your missing some good pump guns in that survey like the Benelli Nova and the Browning BPS in its various choices.

I was in the same situation 3 months ago - could not decide which pump to go with (was also debating between Remington, Mossberg and Stoeger). After bit research and some help from this forum I went with ... Benelli Super Nova. Yes, it is more money, but it will hold it's value much better than any of the other guns and ... it is blast to shoot. Even 3.5" is not a problem as ComforTech absorbs most of recoil.
Check out the Epps in Orilia - they have one for $639 but they will deal on it. I got 50$ off for mine. (MAX4 camo). You will basically end up paying the same amount as for 870 Supermag combo, but you get a MUCH better gun.

Good luck - choice is yours.

Igor.

It is the 870 super mag for me. I shot clays with the 3.5's until I coould go ten for ten before taking any of them hunting. It cost some cash for the shells but no more than practicing with the 30-06.

I opted for the 870 supermag...the normal express rocks as well, but if money's no object, no loss in having the supermag capabilities...not like you can't shoot 2 3/4 out of it, right?

My first 870 was a Sportman 12 Magnum...which is really an 80's version of the express. Comparing its workmanship to the current models, can safely say that the new line of Remingtons' are lacking.

If I had to choose new, I would go for the Benelli Super Nova. If I had any choice in the matter, I'd go for an older 870 here on the EE.

I recently bought a Ducks Unlimited 870 mag on here, vent rib, choke system, sling, etc...250$.

Maverick Mdl 88 12 gauge

'Now I don't know what y'all may want in a shotgun, but the Mossberg Maverick Mdl 88 is everything I could want in one! I don't hunt (don't wanna kill Bambi) and I have my pistols for home defense. I just like to take it out to the range (Ben Avery in Phoenix) and kill paper targets. Using 1oz slugs, it's a helluva weapon at 100 yards and outstanding at 50 yards. Being all black, it's a beauty and with the 28" barrel, just a fun gun to shoot!')

Good old 870. Simple, rugged, and reliable. And with more aftermarket bits and pieces than one person could master in 2 lifetimes.

You could go with supermag if you are a duck/goose hunter. The extra shot in the air helps.

But if you are like me, and just want a rugged bush gun, 2 3/4 inch shells are just what the Dr. ordered.

I own the 870 express synthetic and it works great. Not a pretty gun by any means, but it is versatile and durable. Many aftermarket and interchangeable parts for it will keep it going for anything you might need it for. I didn't opt for the super magnum (3 1/2 inch) because it comes with a really long barrel, and parts apparantly aren't interchangeable with other 870s on this model. Also, 3 1/2 inch shells are almost always steel shot, so don't think you are missing out on too much by not being able to fire them. The faux-lead factory shot available makes the extra 1/2 inch unnecessary, even for waterfowling.
