If you were in the market to buy a used rifle dedicated to hunting coyotes and assuming that they were both in equally good condition and at the same price, which one would you buy?

Weatherby Vanguard Synthetic 22-250 with a Bushnell Elite 4200 scope mounted; or

Remington Model 700 VTR Tactical 223 with no scope.

My 2 cents

well Dave, If only one comes with a scope I guess it just depends weather you prefer open sights or scope. The .223 would knock down most four leggers (small) and i'm sure the 22-250 would do the same.......I have a mini 14 and peep sights that work great:sniper:

I'd take the Weatherby, it's probably a better shooter. It comes with a decent scope. I do prefer the .223 caliber as a coyote gun, simply because it's quieter. But the 22-250 is an awesome round for that purpose. The other reason is more a personal thing, I don't like Remington as a company, I won't even purchase their .22 shells, but that's me. So yeah, I'd take the Vanguard. Oh, I just thaught of this. The ultimate coyote gun has a detachable mag. for days when it's -28 like today.

22-250 is more readily available than .223 in my experience but there is definitely more variety in .223. Mind you how much variety do you need?

I have no experience with the weatherby but have never owned a Remington rifle that I liked.

In teh end it boils down to what do you like? What model Elite is it? If it is just a 3-9X40, they are a dime a dozen.

I have a scope(s) that I can put on the 223 so that's not much of an issue. The power of the Elite 4200 is 3-9x40. I'd re-sell the scope and put mine on. I'll likely only ever use 55 grain bullets in either rifle so that's not a big issue to me either.

I haven't handled either rifle so I don't know which one feels better to me.

Either caliber will work for me so I guess that it's a matter of reading the reviews on both rifles and coming up with a decision on which one to buy.

Ahhhh......decisions, decisions.

I don't have a 22-250 and do have a few 223s, that said, for a coyote only gun I would go for a 22-250 hands down. Use enough gun at the range u plan to shoot. ( Yes I have shot coyotes with 223 at 300yds, and 1 shot kills are common just not as common as 22-250)

I'd go for the Remington. I'd prefer .204 Ruger over either of the chamberings offered but .223 seems to have as many or more available factory loadings and with surplus ammo can be much less expensive than 22-250.
