Which one would you get

I’m thinking about getting a new gun and have narrowed it down to two, a Uberti 1876 Winchester is 45/60 or a Pedersoli Officers model trapdoor.Would mainly be used for hunting and a little target shooting .If you had to choose between these two guns which one would you get and why

Both are very nice rifles. There are three pressure ratings for BP actions. The trapdoor is at the bottom at 18,000 cup, Winchesters/Marlins are in the middle at 28,000 cup, Ruger #1 at 50,000 cup. I own a officers trapdoor as well as a number of Winchesters. The trap is a single shot vs a Winchester that has a tubular magazine that offers up follow up shots if needed. When I use any of my traps for hunting and after I have sighted my game I keep two rounds between my fingers to place in the breach for a rapid follow up shot if required which is not very often.

Personally I would choose the 1876...
 
Hard choice... Buy both & relieve any anxiety from possibly making the wrong purchase.

No need to Thank me or explain it to the significant other. Just do it! LOL!
 
I would pick the trapdoor. Mainly because I like single shot rifles more than lever guns :).

Lever guns are limited to a narrow range of bullet designs and cartridge overall length so they feed right. Single shot rifles allow you to play with all sorts of bullet designs. Also they are a little easier to clean when shooting black powder.

That's my $0.02 :)

I would go for the Trapdoor in 45-70. Even with it's low pressure rating the standard 45-70 will put every game down. I would also be concerned about the weight of the gun on a hunt and the Officer's Trapdoor is at 7.7 lbs. compared to 10.2 lbs. for the 1876...

I would actually give Pedersoli a call, their owner/operation manual states to only use commercial loads (yea right!). so their trapdoor in .45-70 is probably (logically) designed for smokeless powders. That same manual states the proof house proofs their .45-70 to 32,00 CUP.

Keeping in mind we are discussing a modern manufactured action here - an original trapdoor, don't even think about it, black powder only ;)
