a j cave the PM is sent. you will see the small temporary hitch at the beginning. As for the rest I've decided I'm gonna get both .308 and 30-30 but the .308 first as it's a more all round big game gun then the long standing tried and true 30-30. It's also easier to come up with the $200-$400 for the 30-30 (depends on type and used or new) then the .308 and I already have some money saved so I'm just gonna build on that so I can get a .308.

I thank everyone for your help up to this point and if there is something I should know about/look for in a gun that shoots either caliber please let me know as I need all the help I can get.

There's more than enough good used Marlins on the EE to be able to avoid buying new.

I'd take the Savage.

I would take the Savage for the caliber but this is an easy one to answer who need a new not so well made Marlington... JP.

308 far better, nothing wrong with a 30-30, i would take the 308

I'd take the Savage .308 in a heartbeat...but then I'm a sucker for good guns that aren't being made any longer.

Have both-a Marlin 336 in 35Rem and a Savage 99 308. The 308 is a far superior cartridge in all aspects to the 30-30 and the 99 carries about as nice as a Marlin or 94 as well. This is bear country too so nice to have both the range and the extra thump just in case.

My vote goes for the Savage. The .308 is much more versatile that the 30-30.
