Who has either any of these and how are they working for you. I looking for a low cost plinker. Here are three of the cheap ones at SIR.

1) Mossberg Model 702 Plinkster Semi Automatic Rifle 21” brushed chrome barrel

2) Marlin Model 795 Rifle

3)Remington Model 597 Semi Auto Rifle with Scope

The Remington 597 "yellow jacket" :D:D

Let me ask you this, do you have a big game rifle, what is it and what's it worth.....

A friend of mine has the 597 with the scope. His is not fussy about ammo at all, he never cleans it, and it outshoots my target model 597. I think they are the way to go, especially for the money. They also come on sale at crappy tire for like $180, and the scope is not that bad. Thats an insane price for the performance I have witnessed.

Also, try the feel of a mossberg plinkster, I think you will shoulder it and then set it back down, I know I did.

I can't comment on the marlin as I have no experience with it, but I hear they make a fine .22

I had a Marlin 795 and could not stand it. It never could get through a magazine without a problem of one kind or another. Not sure if it was just that particular one, or if others have had issues with theirs. I jumped on the 10/22 bandwagon and never looked back.

However out of your choices the Remington Model 597 Semi Auto Rifle with Scope is your best bet in my opinion.

I just sold my Rem .300 Ultra mag and thinking of replacing it with a Browning X bolt .300 WSM about $900.00

Now let me ask you this, which gun, the .300 WSM or the .22 rifle will you shoot more often? If you put 1000 rounds a year through your .300, good for you. But if you put 1000 through your .22 in a weekend, wouldn't you want a better quality rifle you would be proud of? Invest your money where it belongs. A $300 Stevens rifle will kill a deer a year as good as your X-Bolt. But a cheap .22, especially an autoloader will give you problems, and you will never enjoy the most fun form of shooting as you should. As a side note, my .22 rifle and scope are worth as much as your X-Bolt, but I use it alot more than I could ever think of using a full sized rifle. Good luck.

Spend the money. If you want semi auto, get the best you can afford. I opted for the Ruger K10/22T. It needs some extras like the trigger replaced but that's about it. It's accurate, fun and a decent quality rimfire.

You'll shoot the rimfire a lot more than the others. It's worth spending the money on the initial investment. The cost of ammo will more than make up for that in the future.

Pharoah2 is trying to lead you down the right track. Do it right and do it once.

pharoh I hear what you are saying but i'm looking for something cheap to start with that I will give one of my boys eventually if either shows an interest. (I have two, 18 yrs and 7 yrs) My oldest is heading off to University so won't really have a lot of time. I do agree with you that I will probally fire the 22lr more then the x bolt. I plan to buy something better when I know more about rim fires. I do appreciate the advice. Thanks

Thanks for all the info guys. Thats what I like about this site you get such a wide range of answer that you don't always think about. Keep them coming I hope to pick one up shortly.
