Which optic for .22?

So I am planning (read as: working on a deal right now) on getting a Savage MkII TR and I am thinking about what optic I would slap on top. I am trying to keep things under $200 as this is just a for fun gun, and not for anything serious aside the odd squirrel or pest.

I do like the look of a NC Star Mark III Series scope, however its a NS Star. Would you use a NC Star scope on your .22 "precision" rifle?

I also have a Vortex Crossfire on my Remington 700 that I was looking to upgrade, could I just plop that on top of my .22?

I am looking for 3-4x (Low end) to 10-16x (high end) scope with adjustable paralax. With preferably a 50+mm objective lens.
 
JMO... but skip the NC Star. Your Vortex Crossfire will work fine... I really like Muellers on some of my guns... either the APV (wonderful value on a really nice scope, around $130) or the APT (around $165)... the APT is a 30mm tube and is a bit heavy though... but it has something that I think every rimfire scope should have... and that is some type of Mil-Dot reticle or multi aimpoint reticle... the reason is that rimfires have a very arching trajectory... mil-dot type reticles allow you to have a specific aiming point for your holdover... and if you shoot at multiple distances, this will be critical. If you were a bench shooter shooting only at 50 or 100 Yards, then this would not be an issue. The other CRITICAL element for a rimfire scope is Adjustable Objective (AO), this allows you to focus the scope at various ranges to avoid (as much as possible) parallax... I like my AO scopes to focus as close as 10 yards... because we often shoot small game as close as that (and closer)...

Right now, my favorite rimfire scope is the Hawke Varmint SF (side focus)series (around $170-$200)... I currently have two 3-12X44mm SF scopes and two 4-16X44mm SF scopes ... they are well built, bright, clear, forgiving and have a new and absolutely BRILLIANT "1/2 Mil-Dot" reticle, that is the best I have ever used with a rimfire weapon.
 
depends on how far you wany t to shoot and how accurate at distance you want to be. I field shoot a lot of gophers each year and normally use a Bushnell 3x9x out to 100. after that i shoot a 6x24x scope. both are effective within thier magnification range.

SF varmint Hawke, I have a couple of these my self. They certainly are a great scope for the money. I know a fellow in Edmonton that has 3 brand new ones for sale. I have one on my Sako Vixen in 223 and 1 on one of my 22 Hornets. FS

Bushnell used to and maybe still do have a 6-18x 50 in a banner that is under 200, not nearly as nice as a Hawke, but the hawke won't come with a 50mm objective.
I have always thought that we almost always shoot rimfire rifles with the best light of the day and that a 50mm bell was completely unnecessary. IMHO. FS
 
Well, what Crossfire do you have? I think they're a decent scope, and I plan on getting a 4-12x40AO as my next .22lr scope. With rimfires, I think it's important to look at the parallax setting which on that scope, is 10 yards to infinity. Most vortex scopes are 50 yards+, meaning only practical for targets at/beyond that range.

The scope I bought most recently was a Mueller APT which to me, is a little heavy-duty (magnification and weight) for a .22lr. Here it is sitting on my Savage .22WMR;

As hoyt pointed-out, I think mil-dot reticles are great...and the APT has a nice fine one. This is a hefty scope for carrying, unless you're a big ape like me. Also, I'd be curious as to where you'd find one in Canada for that price, I paid more...and thought I got a good deal.
