which part of a handgun considered a firearm ?

in a rifle it is a receiver, but in a handgun, is it a frame ? can i swap barrels and slides ( same length that is ) and other parts with serial numbers around without breaking the law ?

Yep frame is the gun. Swap away as long as barrel length is not changed.

You can change the barrel length as long as it is a legal barrel length. My 1911 grows to 16" sometimes.
