Hey,
Kind of still a novice at reloading, so thought if I could tap the experts experience for which powders they prefer for reloading 9mm and 45 auto semi-handguns. I started using Unique for the 45 and WAP for the 9mm, but it was looking a bit to me as if the spent cases were coming out a little blacker on the exterior than store purchased ammo. Am not quite sure if the powders I'm using are not very clean burning or what.

Any input would be appreciated.

Unique ain't known to be one of the cleanest powders around. If you want clean brass, try Clays, but you'll get pitiful performance. Also, some powders, like Longshot, will burn cleaner in higher pressure loads (like 40S&W) than lower pressure loads (like 45ACP).

My allaround powder is Titegroup. Takes little, performance is good and is moderately dirty.

I use both W231 and Titegroup in the 9mm and 45acp as well as a variety of other handgun calibers. Both perform equally well, but the nod goes to Titegroup as it is cleaner burning and performs well with smaller charges than 231.
If you choose TG you wont be disappointed.
Cheers:)

PoFF advised TG when I asked here for a good .45 powder a while back. Over 1500 rounds later I haven't had any reason to change. Economical amounts and good accuracy. As noted above, it is moderately dirty but nothing a quick tumble or ultrasound bath won't take care of. Don't know how it works in the nine personally but from what the other guys say you can't go wrong with TG....

I have been using 231 for 9mm and .45 ACP for almost 15 years now. No reason to change. It's fine.

Powders

I use Titegroup for my .40 but for the .45 either bullseye or recently been using Clays, bought a bulk can cause I use it for my 12 ga. as well, really really clean in the shotgun.
Did use Green dot for a while no probs. there either.

In terms of relative burning rates of powders, the following groups of powders have similar speeds:

5. Hodgdon Clays
6. IMR, Co "HI-Skor" 700-X
7. Alliant Bullseye
8. Hodgdon TITEGROUP

18. IMR, Co SR 7625
19. Hodgdon HP-38
20. Winchester 231
21. Alliant Unique
22. Hodgdon Universal
23. Alliant Power Pistol

Generally, I use Titegroup and 231

unique

I've been using Unique for 18 years now with good results in the .45acp. I also shoot alot of .44WCF and .45 Colt so find it handy to use one powder. The "new Unique" is about 50% cleaner burning and seems to show a lower SD also. I like the way unique bulks as it is difficult to double charge a case and accuracy has been more than satisfactory with cast bullets.

I'm not much of an experimenter! I haven't had to adjust the powder measure on my Dillon reloader in years.
