I'm looking at getting a 300 win mag, and planning to put a bushnell 3200 scope on it. My debate is whether to go with a 3-9x40 or a 3-9x50 and which reticle. I like the ballistic reticle as well as the firefly. I'll be using the gun for hunting as well as some long range target shooting. Suggestions?

For hunting the 3x9 will do nicely. 40mm or 50mm is a matter of taste and also if you plan on shooting in low light conditions. As for long range shooting I prefer higher powers. I currently use a 4 ot 15 power. However for the vast majority of time I leave it on 10X. Perhaps a scope going up to 12X might be a good compromise. For me anyway 9X is not enough for long distance precision range work.

As for the 3200 scopes I have one and am pleased with it as a hunting scope. The 4200 are more clear with Leupolds and such providing excellent optics. Buy the best you can afford. Good optics can be pricey so watch the EE for deals. Know your retail prices and jump on a good deal when you see it because they don't last long here.

FlyingHigh,
A 3 X 9 X 40 would make a good allround scope on a .300. I would go with the best glass you can afford, and don't be afraid to check the used stuff for sale. As far as 50mm obj. goes, I personally don't like them for a hunting rig, weight goes up, scope height goes up, and unless your going to a 30mm tube I don't think you are taking the full advantage of light gathering that an obj. of that size is meant for.

Just my .2cts, Homesteader

I agree with Homesteader, on a hunting rifle, the scope should be kept as small as is prudent, and mounted as securely as possible. Keep in mind with a .300 that you want to maximize your eye relief, and that once you get under 3", an uphill shot could result in a nasty bump. Therefore you must consider what your eye relief will be when your scope is dialed into the high magnification. As for reticle choice, I don't think it is prudent to have a reticle that is too busy on a hunting rifle. There is a lot to be said for a duplex reticle for all around use.

Eye relief are on the short side for a 300 win mag. I would look for something with a minimum of 3.5'' at max power.

I just hope you have a good muzzle brake with the Bushnell
