Hi, my name is Perry, and I am gonna get my PAL soon( I have called firearm center to confirm). Besides a rimfire rifle, probabily a Marlin60, I also wanna buy a proven centerfire for plinking or deer hunting( just thinking...A deer is a huge animal.haha..). Anyways, I wish I can get a affordable, say below $500, would be better if under $400, and can be accurate up to like 200m or 300m with a not bad scope. I know nothing about caliber either. I have heard a lot of people like .223 or .243, which one is more versatile? And the ammo shouldn't be too expensive so that I don't dare to take my shot in the range. Some affordable rifles have drawn my attention, like Stevens Model 200, Remington Model 700 SPS(I know everybody likes 700, but it's a bit too ex#####ve for me), and super cheap H&R Ultra single shot rifle. Suggestion and comments for a centerfire noob plz~ Thank u! :)

stevens 200 in .308
or a package rifle from savage. they come with a scope and you'll have the accutrigger, wich the stevenc 200 wont have

bot would be a good buy
up to you, buy what you prefer looks wise. all good rifles

Stevens 200 (this is the same rifle you will read about in this forum many times under the name Savage) in .223 was my choice. Ammo is much cheaper for practice than .308 and definitely will perform well past the range you plan to shoot. SIR had the best price last time I checked, $300 and a bit. Scope mounts can be had for a few dollars, or you can get very high quality (more than you need at that range) mounts for more.

However if you do plan to hunt things larger than coyotes with it the .308 would be a better choice. I guess it depends how much you plan to shoot it at the range, you could save enough on ammo costs using .223 to pay for another Stevens 200 in .308 if you shoot enough. Mine is very accurate, I love it. 8)

If you are looking for a new rifle, yes the Stevens is a great buy, but if you are looking for a used rifle, there are all sorts of possibilities!
I just purchased for a friend a Swedish Mauser in 6.5X55, with a scope and an aftermarket stock.
These rilfes normally shoot very well, ammo is pretty cheap, low recoil and good ballistics.

Also, if you run into a GOOD Enfield that has been reconditioned by Parker Hale, or has some aftermarket stocks and scope on it, you will likely not find a better bargain.

The problem with the Enfields is that some shoot well while others are pure crap!

Take a good look at what you can find, jopin a rifle club, and try to shoot as many rifles as you can.

Club mambaers are normally very proud of their gear and have no problem whatsoever of letting a new fella taking a few shots with their favorite rifles!

Just remember, tkae a good look at all the brands, and make a decision on what you can handle (finacially and in the power departmant!)
You have lots of time so you want to make a good decision once!

Yeah..thanx for the suggestion. Stevens 200 indeed looks like a good deal to me. Just wondering what's the difference between that and its Savage clone. BTW, what is Swedish Mauser in 6.5X55? Is that just a cliber or ... ? If that is a rifle, where can I get it?

hehehe I'm in the same boat as you are Perrypan.

But I believe it's a milsurp rifle, Swedish Mauser, and the caliber would be 6.5x55... i think... I'll leave it to the pro's. :D I have no idea where you could get one, heck I have no idea what it could even look like.

Goodluck :)

The 6.5 swede is my favorite calibre, but please tell me where you get cheap ammo. Good factory loads are going to cost a dollar a round, believe me I shoot lots of 6.5.

Been considering the stevens 200 in .223 also.

Not sure where toi get it in Newfoundland(never been there!) , but P&D in Edmonton as well as Milarm, Rick at Alberta tacticll may be able to help you also.
The last bunch we bought was from things Military, they are in calgary...
