Which pump action to get for bear defense

I have a remington 870 and mossberg 535 and am familliar with both. I am getting a Mossberg 500 or 590 for tactical style shooting / animal defence. Two reasons:

1. I find the safety position & size on the 870 make it difficult to see / feel - Especially when the adrenaline is flowing. The Mossberg safety is highly visible and tactile.
2. The slide release is forward of the trigger guard on the 870. I prefer mossberg's position - Behind the trigger guard, which allows the shooter to release the slide faster from a natural grip without having to cover across the trigger guard. Its an easier mechanism.

If you are prone to wear gloves due to weather or work I encourage you to operate both with gloves on to see what is easiest and fastest (and thus the safest). I suspect it will be the Mossberg that wins that one.

Happy shopping! http://www.mossberg.com/product/500-tactical-6-shot-50411/

lol... so if I understand you, an 870 or Dominion Arms 870 copy is "not for you" for bear defence, but a lowest-possible tier single shot with an aluminum receiver IS for you?

I'm sure you will enjoy your new gun in many great ways, but I would NEVER carry that gun for bear defence unless it was my last option. Why trust your life and the lives of those with you to a $150 gun that only has one round in it?

Hey now, in the new future he can be shopping for another gun to add to the collection. I like the "mission creep" approach to gun collecting.

My buddy has this gun. I've shot it many times. It's a hell of alot better than dominion arms. It's not Chinese crap. I know many people that had the grizzly and they failed. Cracked receivers and barrels.

My main bear defense is my 45-70 loaded with 400gr barnes buster going 1950fps. I decided to buy this gun because of it being light weight and it folds up and I can throw it in my pack for hikes.

Down the road I may buy a pump but not right now

You're the first person in years that I've heard say they've seen multiple catastrophic failures in Grizzly shotguns. Sorry, but I don't buy it.

It's been a few years but last year my buddy sell it all the gun shows in BC and they had 15 of them that they were selling for parts because they all had Cracked Barrels and receivers.

Those if it was a few years back then those were the Norinco 780 Homeland Security models which are well documented as being dangerous POS guns.
Completely different gun than the DA Grizzly/PDS/HP9 models that are currently available.

Make sure you put a bunch of test rounds through it first because the new Remington Express' arent the best made gun. (Ensure it cycles, ejects and feeds dependably before trusting your life with it, because they are known to act up) Ironically, the latest Chinese clones often preform better than the new Express...

I didn't buy a brand new one in the store

870s are great, and they're my favorite shotguns. Fact is that quality control on the Express line has been less than stellar and not up to old school standards the past 3-4 years.
I have a Magpul Express and I think they paid closer/better attention with those models because it's slick and well made.

What does it matter what you buy, you'll never use it for bear defense anyway.
You're only trying to justify a cheap, short barreled shotgun. Yea real cool.

this gun i had anad i sold it a few years ago and bought a 1895gbl and couldnt be happier, but i wish i never sold it. the only thing that was terrible on it was the 12.5" dominion arms barrel. i had to replace it twice because it cracked
