I don't want to drill and tap so it has to be a non gunsmithing mount. There are several to chose from but I just can't make up my mind, so far there has always been a downside to every one I have looked at. Which is the best ?

I went with the Magwedge rail.
https://www.magwedge.com/product/magwedge-sks-kwikrail-gen-2-5/

Being a full rail I can put whatever kind of optic I want on there, and it gives me a lot of flexibly about how close/far from my face I mount a red dot. The only downside is no stripper clips but I can live with that. It's not like we can use a full clip in Canada anyways.

I like how the rail protects any optic on top of it. I've heard reports of ejected cases taking out the rear lens of the optic on some of the smaller rails that only attach to the rear sight. Of course there are mods you can do to tune down the ejection a bit too...

I have tried every red dot on the market. some work well,..like the full MW rail....but I've always found that the original irons were the most accurate at medium & longer range.
Have fun with all the optics out there,...I did.

BC tactical made a solid sks rail mount that would replace the rear sight. However they are hard to come by nowadays as he no longer makes them.

There are a few companies that make some excellent rails... Both in canada or the states.... All of them have stopped or do such limitted runs you are unlikley to get one now....

But the Chinese one off of amazon for $15 bucks is decent, you just have to wait on the shipping.

If you can find a spare dust cover and make it tight or get lucky and have it be very tight on your rifle what i have in my two pics is very nice. What I have is a spare dust cover that was very tight on my rifle with a weaver base that matched the contour on the dust cover, drilled and tapped on. On the second pic I have to red circles, if you have a spare dust cover that is loose you can put a few tacks on those surfaces with a mig and then file. I had to do that to get a mount on my brothers rifle. It sounds like its more work than you're interested in from your OP but it may help you out in the future or maybe someone else who is reading this thread. I had a gunsmith drill and tap the base onto the dust cover and I don't know what the base is, its just something that i found at a gunshow that fit.

....

I agree. The cover has long engagement rails and is quite stiff all by itself. Decades ago I found a cover with a flat base machined into the top. Its rail has a limited L/R windage adjustment with a front pivot and a rear snubbing screw. The base may have come from Keng's in Atlanta, Georgia along with some red fibreglass stocks.

My favorite setup over years for the sks. Scout mount is a cheap solution, easy to install and will hold 0. Its solid and a red dot on it will do the job. On the pic i use a holosun 507c solar. I recommend it regardless the price.

I would not recommend the magwedge full rail. You gonna drill off the cover pin and its a pain when it comes to field strip. I wouldnt use that setup ever.

That's the best looking mount system I have seen, very neat and tidy. The only draw back I can think of is that the iron sights are no longer usable.

There is an interesting youtube video that I discovered today, "Best AK 47 + SKS Mount Ever and LESS than $20 - Insane Accuracy" it appears to have everything.

I tried them all almost over the years and finally went with a Choate drill/tap receiver mount. I can still use stripper clips and the open sites if I want. I know you don't want to go that route but a drill and tap mount is the best option.IMO

Brass stacker makes a good one that mounts atop tthe rear sight block and anchors to the recoild crossbolt.

Installation looks long and no iron sights, but the design is made to hold zero.

Sooch00 has a review on youtube

If you can find them the Midwest industries sks mini red dot mount is nice and low but as others have said scout mounts are great options

I got one that’s pretty much brand new I’d sell if anyone is interested, I’ve gone back to irons and have a magwedge rail if I feel the need to put an optic on.

Edit: I might have sold it last year, I’ll have to check my parts bin lol.

Wolverine supplies have them.

I don't know if there is a post cap to post image. You do have to link images from another sight. I use IMGUR and post the BBC code from the sight.

I will try that now.
