Which Red dot should I buy?

I have an SKS with a Magwedge Kwikrail and am looking for a RDS. I've narrowed it down to either the Bushnell TRS-25, Primary Arms MD-06L, or the Vortex SPARC. My experience with these optics is very limited and I'm looking for comparisons and why/why nots for any of these optics. Thanks in advance!

I had a SPARC II and really liked it. I only got rid of it because I ended up putting a Vortex 1-4PST (soon to be a 1-6 Razor HDII) on 'cause I like that I can use it as both a dot and an scope. I'm sure someone will correct me that using a scope as a red dot isn't the same, but I'm not SWAT or a Solidier - so I'll live with the compromise..... I can keep both eyes open and acquire targets quickly, or dial it up and address a mangy coyote at 250yards....

I went the "Red" route for my 58 and 858, VOMZ Collimator sights.

The P1x20 for my Compact (a smaller pistol sized unit, perfect for the application).

I own a SPARC 2. I like the small 2 mil dot and it is easily visible in bright sunlight. Low light capable. Quick target acquisition. No parallax issues. Auto shut off for those brain fart moments. Good battery life. Lifetime warranty. Not on your list but you should also look at the Holosun for all the reasons I mentioned above.

Haha that article is actually what helped me narrow it down! Thanks for posting it here! What is the difference between the SPARC/SPARC II? Do you really get the extra bang for your buck?
 
SPARC II is the newer version. They tweaked the original design. The optic now includes flip-caps, and the battery cap is now removable by hand without using a coin. They've also changed to the battery type to a 2032 from the CR 2354 type. If you keep spares on your gun, the 2032 may fit where the 2354 does not. Power on off moved from side to rear to avoid accidental shut down if you lay gun down. Changed shut off from 6 to 12 hours.

The two people seem to be sugesting are the Trs25 and the Sparc. Since we are talking about a SKS, i am assuming that the price point would be pushing it for the sparc. Have not owned a sparc, but have a trs on my H&R 45-70 and i like it. Avoid going one of the cheap chinese red dots unless you like buying things twice. NC Star is the brand i was thinking.

Yeah, you're right about the SKS price point. A SPARC gen I or II would be at the top of my price range. Avoiding NcStar like the plague. How do you like the glass on your TRS-25?

I was looking at that one actually, it's a SPARC I. SPF at the moment. I checked out the SPARC II, seems like the brightness panel on the left side is smaller than the first gen with the removal of that night vision button. Might give a better field of view..

The TRS has a non round "dot" and there is a prism or some such visible thru the lense. It is what it is, the cheapest, actually reliable red dot. I believe they go for about $140 new and usually still go for $100-120 on the EE.

High end red dots are often counterfieted, so i would personally only buy from a reputable dealer. There was a thread about there being trouble with Eotech red dots.
 
Sparc II gets my vote. Had a TRS for a while. Nice unit, but the sparc II feels much more rugged. The clarity and dot size on the Sparc II also were better in my opinion than the TRS. Not that I'm saying the TRS is bad or anything. For the price it is great.

You may want to consider looking at the Holosun. It has a better field of view motion activated and outstanding battery life. It was down to Vortex or Holosun for me. I was leaning to Holosun as a first choice but was "gifted" the SPARC II. Having said all this I am satisfied with my SPARC II.

Hmm..you've really peaked my interest. Considering the price is slightly less than the SPARC and field of view is MUCH better than both the TRS and the SPARC I think I'm leaning this way. Were you ever concerned about that -10C operating temp? I'm sure the other optics all have similar temp limits, the manufacturers just don't specify.

The Holosun is a Chinese made optic ( but so is the TRS25). You get what you pay for.

Most if not all red dot optics at this price point will have low temp limitations. The batteries used have a lot to do with that. The cheaper emitters used are also a factor. All optics in this price point are made in China. Some are better than others.

I also read this review as well as many others. You have to do your homework when you buy anything and never rely on one persons experience. All optics at any price point are going to have good and bad reviews. Go online to as many reviews as possible. I like Amazon.com for reviews. These are actual owners who write them and sometimes there are hundreds to view. I seldom purchase any item with less than 4 of 5 star ranking.
