Which Rifle for Whitetail?

.250-3000 AI and I will loan you the rifle! 8)

But let's be honest, you can't beat the extra "oomph" (define it any way you want) of the .277 vs the .257 bullet.

But because this is causing you such angst, here is a promise to take to the bank:

I will go along to be your gun-bearer, and you decide at the last minute which one you want to use, based on what is happening in front of us. You shoot the big buck with your preferred shootin' iron, and I will use the other one to shoot that little fellow.

Elegant, eh what? 8)

For deer only the 25-06 would be a great choice.Basically the same ballistics as the 25wssm but with more variety of rifles and ammunition and it will probably still be around for a long time whereas the wssm may not.
Hey Stubs didn't you predict the failure of the WSM's as well

Actually I did not.I did predict the failure of the SAUMs and it certainly looks like their days are numbered. My only objection to the WSMs was the misleading advertising used by winchester and browning to market them.

I made a career best shot with the .25wssm... but I have killed quite a few coyotes at long range with the 270wsm... I am leaning hard towards the .270... horsepower rules at long range.

At 300 to 400 yards the .25wssm still has enough power for any situation. At longer distances,I would skip the .277"s and go to my 7mmstw for even flatter trajectory and more power.

Geezuz Stubs... now I am thinking about the 300WM with the 26 inch heavy barrel... or the .338

Sorry Stubs... I thought you had predicted the demise of the WSM's... I should have known better
I did some range work with the 25WSSM today and had a chance to test the Varmint Reticle on the new Leuplold VXIII... I was able to hit the 500 yard target consistently in high winds using the range and windage reticles 8)
I am going to do some more long range testing with both rifles before I commit... it may come down to a coin toss

How about the 30-30 :?:

Huntsman :)
Ok funny guy.
I did take a wild dog with a 30-30 off a fence post rest out in BC about thirty years ago. The distance was about 300 yards.
It was a dog amongst the sheep, I had to take the shot. I'll readily admit that it was blind luck that it connected. I was using the original factory sights.
The 30-30 has been used to clang steel (for fun) out at 1000 yards. But it's hardly a long range number. It doesn't have the energy levels, or the speed to cleanly take big game.

I am waiting for the exhalted GlenFilthie's opinion. I will immediately concur with whatever he says.

Seriously though BR, you are an experienced rifleman, and I am sure you could hit (properly) a deer out to the ranges you state with either one. But what if that true once in a lifetime buck steps out? Wouldn't you rather have the 140gr bullet driving home?
