Which rifle in 257 Why mag around $1000 used

Is there that much of a speed difference between the Vanguard 24 inch barrel vs the Mark V 26 inch barrel? What about getting a Vanguard adn putting in something like an 26 inch fluted ER Shaw barrel? or am I just throwing good money away without much improvement. Again Im not using this for shooting competitions but for hunting, but I do understand that once you get out to 400 + yards those small differences can make a big difference

I got 3650 fps in the accumark and my friend got 3590 fps in his vanguard. Thats 100 gr tsx hand loads for both rifles. Not really any difference. You can have more variation than that do to chambers and barrels. There is no reason not to buy a 24" 257 wby.

I also think the action (mkv) is to big for the "small" 257 and I think the accumark is to heavy and unwieldy which is why I sold mine. Get the vanguard. You can put a McMillan on it (I ordered mine) and for a grand you will have a great rifle.

Simmer down you crotchety old Cooper lover :HR:

My Stainless Vanguard in 257 WBY 24" barrel gets , 3500fps- 100gr bullet, 3400fps 110gr Accubond, 3330fps 115gr Partition and 3280fps 120gr Partition.
It also shoots 3/4" 3 shot groups at 200yds with the 120's. I don 't know what the 26" barrel gets but it can't be that much more. I can go 2 more grains of IMR 7828 with the 120 but it shoots so well I quit there. My gun LOVES IMR 7828 with the heavier bullets.

Vanguard Series 2 Synthetic from Cabella's $539

I took the plunge
I ordered the Vanguard Series 2 Synthetic from Cabella's $539 - a deal I could not pass up. :dancingbanana:

I noticed that Wholesale Sports is blowing out their Vanguard 257 Why for $349 but I decided to pay a bit more for the series 2 which is supposed to have a better trigger, nicer stock plus they are Sub MOA ....

So thanks for everyone's input

I've had both the Mark V and the 700 CDL and 2 custom built jobs in 257 Wby. My current CDL FSS shoots 110 accubonds into well under moa and gives me 3680 fps with RL 25. Do not let anyone tell you different, if you want all the 257 can give you a 26" tube is essential. A good used Mark V or the CDL SSF are both outstanding rifles and worth the extra you pay and have the 26" tube. The CDL has the better trigger of the 2 and mine is more accurate, but RL 25 wasn't around when I had my Mark V.

Your 110 accubond load is a full 220 fps faster than weatherby loads their 110 accubonds. Your example is so far removed from any load data for the 110 gr and weatherby factory loads (which are by no means mellow) that it really doesn't serve as an example or reason to get a 24" over a 26" barrel. You are fully capable if achieving 3600 fps with the 100 gr bullets in a 24" barrel. This is what weatherby loads their ammo to but in a 26" barrel.

Who shaves when they're huntin'?
I guess that depends on who you go hunting with? If your hunting buddy is a cute blonde female ... then you shave ... but then again maybe Ive just been watching to many hunting shows on Wild TV this winter ... cause I dont have a hunting buddy like that ... so I guess I dont need a remington :D
