Lebarons in Ottawa has a sweet deal on the tikka hunter with sights on sale now for around $700 deep bluing and nice wood they only have 3006 in stock however not sure how set you are on the 308 good luck

Sako Bavarian Carbine (can be found in 308, 30-06, and 270)

Mauser Sporter (Tradex have some absolute beauties). This one was custom made by a BC smith, and features a small-ring FN Mauser action and Brno 21 furniture and metal bits. Wood to metal fitment is superb and rivals any modern high-end rifle.

Both are lighter weight, and the later are usually in your price-range, and in nice calibres, including 30-06, 308, and 7x57.

Notice both are wood and metal? I have Synthetic/Laminate/Stainless, and they don't often see my camera! BTW, stainless rusts, and pretty easily I might add!
