Which Rifle Is Best To Rebarrel..M70, M7, X-Bolt???

Right on guys,..it seems that the Remingtons are one of the most common to get rebarreled,..and I would be fine with a Model Seven CDL in .358win,...maybe this is the route I should go. The 338 Federal would also be a great choice and I have considered getting one from time to time, but I have all the gear for the 358win, and like I said before, I just really like the cool old cartridge.

Rem M7 or Rem M700 SA and chamber it in 338 Federal ! I have both a 338 and a 358 ! 358 Win is OK but the 338 Fed is much better ballistically and choice of bulets is much better to ! Old GUYS :p seem to like the 358 Win better but most have NEVER had a 338 Federal ! lol ;) RJ

338 Federal ?? I'm glad you said MOST have NEVER had a 338 Federal.... I'm the exception I guess 'cause I had two and gave them away at the Kamloops Show two years in a row..

I would first try a WTB on the EE for either one and see if you could drag up a factory 358 Ruger or 338 Tikka. Sell off one of yours and it would be a lot cheaper.

Your right SuperCub,..I was thinking of trying to find a Model Seven 358 before I spend the extra cash on a rifle and barrel.

There's an undeniable wisdom to that. If you're going to go to the trouble and expense of a rebarrel (and probably blueprint) job then you might as well shop around to see if you can get what you want off the shelf. Rebarreling should be reserved for instances where you want something that you can't get from the factory.

My choice would have been 350 Rem mag. ....they seem to be more common than 358w and they are easily loaded to any level you want. Brass is easy to make with a form trim die etc..anyway I think if you find a 350RM before the 358w...take it instead. Imo

Easiest, cheapest, best. You didn't say from the viewpoint of whom. Everything is easy if you aren't doing the work! I have not rebarreled an X-Bolt but have rebarreled A-bolts and BBR's both of which have occasionally been problematic. From my point of view, the Model 7 would be easiest, the Model 70 would be best, and the X-Bolt would be potentially interesting.
Although he is much, much more mature than I, Dennis is a bit more progressive. I don't like the 60 degree bolt lift for a field rifle and I'm not a real fan of the detachable magazine. I do like two lug actions and Mauser-style extractors. I like the 338 Federal and think it would be a great choice.

A Man of GREAT Knowledge has spoken ! 338 Federal ! :d RJ

Correct me if I'm wrong, but are not X Bolts (A bolts too) interference/epoxy in rebarreling tasks? As opposed to threaded/torqued in??

curious

BBR's, A-Bolts and X Bolts usually have a very tight thread fit, I think this is due to the way the factory assembles the barrel and action. I don't use such a tight thread fit on the re-barreling. I have had only one stainless A Bolt where the threads galled on disassembly and the action had to be re-threaded slightly larger. It wasn't that hard to do and a new barrel was being fitted anyway.

I would not remove a factory barrel and reinstall it without threading it a bit looser.

One much is closer to the truth... :)

^Thank you for that informed answer Guntech!!!

Model Sevens never did come from the factory in 358, nor did any other Remington product.

Right on,..I didn't think Remington ever made a 358 chambered rifle,..but I was thinking I might find a model seven that some may have rebarreled to 358 for sale,...probably a hard find,..but ya never know.
