Which rifle to bring as a backup.

Hi all,

I am preparing for a moose hunt next month in Vald'or Qc. and will be using my Tikka 7MMRemMag loaded with 160gr Accubond and a Elite 3200 3x9x50 :D .

However, I always bring a spare rifle just in case but here is my dilemma... I can't choose between:

1. 303Brit with a SPEER 180gr and a Tasco 2x7x32,

2. Savage .308Win also topped with a Tasco 2x7x32, see trough rings and loaded with some 150gr Nosler Partition Gold,

3. H&R UltraHunter one shot .270win with a Elite 3200 3x10x40 and 140gr Winchester Silvertip

4.or my newest addition Marlin 45-70 loaded with SPEER 400gr on which I installed a fixed 4x scope.

I am tempted to bring my Marlin, especially if I hunt on the ground and use my Tikka on the stand for long shot but the possibility of a 250yds+ shot also exist if I hunt on the ground. They have done some tree cutting in the area 2 yrs ago and you can see well over 300yds :cool: but for the 45-70, it's a bit too long :eek: but perfect in the heavy wood.

So just for the sake of it, what would you bring as a spare rifle (in between the 4)?

I would take the 303 if I were concerned about using my guns in foul weather and the 45-70 if your going to do a lot of walking and scouting around.

This is why I use a S/S Synth Tikka T3 Lite in 300 WM for moose hunting making weather or weight non-factors. As a second gun, I usally bring something that anyone in the group can use making sure that it is not one of my favorite guns. Of course it must be able to kill the animal being hunted.

It has been a standard practice with our group to bring at least one spare gun in case of damaged scopes, etc.

Good hunting - I will be going past Val-D'or all the way to Matagami in zone 16/17 with the season starting next Saturday. I've hunted in zone 13 in the Senneterre area for many years

just bring all of them as a backup gun. When you accually go out close your eyes and pick one as I am sure you can't go wrong with either.`

This would be my choice, unless you want greater magazine capacity...
 
Some of you folks must camp with 4x4 RVs or something to carry all this stuff around with you. :D

Why not just bring the Marlin 45-70 loaded with SPEER 400gr, and be done with it? :D

Yup, we have a one hour drive in the swamp with a J7 or musky on tracks that pull our stuff in a oil tank on its flat on which there are metal ski under. With that rig, we can pull 2 mooses plus the equipement for the group in 1 trip :eek: :cool: .

It's a Cool slow drive but we can't access with ATV's, too much water and swamp for them.

The Marlin is still my first choice as my hunting partner will bring his 30-06 also as a backup, and I never shot anything yet but paper with the 45-70 so a moose would be nice. lol, we won't be under armed.

Both the .270 and 45-70 have punched paper only. The .303Brit has seen the most action followed by the .308, I guess it's time to bring a new on in the woods :D .
