Garand... Patton said it's why the Allies won the war, and I don't think he was far off the mark...
Overwhelming air support and millions of Russians on a second front won WWII.
As for the Sherman Firefly, it could knock out most German tanks but was also extremely vulnerable. It took four of them to get my uncle's father from D-day to VE Day. The first one sank off Juno beach, so maybe that doesn't count.... He was also the only surviving member of his original tank crew, which should say a lot...
I love the LE, in particular the No.1 MkIII that was still in service, but it'd be tough to turn down a Garand...
How'd that go? If you saw a group of soldiers and couldn't identify them, fire a single shot high and wide of their position.
If it was met with steady bursts of rapid machine gun fire they were German.
If the soldiers threw up their hands in surrender they were Italian.
If it was met with a barrage of well aimed rifle fire they were British.
If nothing happened for 15 minutes, then your position was obliterated by artillery or air strike, they were American....

Apparently the Russians would just curse and go back to sleep.

A SIG SK46s. Really, anything Swedish. Or an Spanish 1944 Mauser.
Failing that, an anti-tank dog. The dog would have the rifle, probably.
You're both wrong. Fury and Brad Pitt won WWII.....

Still thinking Sir Charles had it right with his 26-inch tube on a Mark III Ross.
Only a single copy was ever built, in 1914, but it COULD have been the best rifle of the NEXT war.
Another rifle you hear nothing about is the Armaguerra Model 39, which was to have been Italy's answer to the Garand. It is definitely lighter and handier. With decent sights it would have been a real winner. Too bad there were so very few built.
Svt40 or M1 Garand.
Whatever I was issued and trained with.
