Which rifle would you use for cougar?

Littleboylefty is right on. Cats hunt mostly by sight and a spinning fluttering feather will bring them in faster than sound or smell. Of course the combo of all three is best. I used the feather trick at all of my Lynx trap sets and had great success compared to just scent. The 7.62X39 would work well.

Why would you shoot a cougar?

......And because it makes for great pictures and memories.;)

Hey Jimy,
My brother in laws friend used hounds, it's his cat, I'm just doing the heavy lifting for the picture.
Personally I could not imagine trying to call them in unless you happened to spot one or fresh tracks and then set up. Their range must be huge.

My posting the pic wasn't to curb the thread, more to show the unique experience you can have. Have a little read if you want:

There is a link inside this link going to the original story. For sure a story to share with the grandkids on Christmas eve night......

i know this is not the norm, but the guys that used to run the high country camp( it's around fernie) use a win 94/30-/30 /170 for everything , but that's self/pack train defense( horses) , not hunting- and the wounded rabbit call WORKS big time- given the option. you can't beat a 308/165 as it's a m14 style rifle given

If I was just out chasing cats I would use my single shot T/C Contender carbine with it's 18.5" 10mm barrel installed and I would be shooting 180gr Gold Dot's or 200gr XTP's...

I would have a 1X - 4X Vari X11 Leupold scope on it just in case I had to thread the shot thru a hole in the branches.

Don't see iron sights as good as I used to... :(
