Which Rifle??

Hey folks,

I got $300 to Cabelas for Christmas, and I am looking for some input as to which rifle I should purchase as my first. I am limiting myself to a maximum of $600.

I was thinking the Savage Axis XP in Stainless at first, but then changed to the Savage 111 FCXP3. I have now changed to possibly the Remington 700 SPS package (Comes with a 4-12x40 scope and hard case.)

With the two savage rifles, I would be upgrading the optics.

Anyways, throw me your opinions. I have decided on .308 as the caliber of choice. I really like the idea of a detachable magazine, but it would not be a deal breaker.

Thanks folks,

-Jeff

I haven't heard from anyone that they are unhappy with their Savage Edge/Axis, but I personally would spend the extra if I could afford it for a Savage 11 or 111, either on its own or as the package. If you want .308, that'll be an 11, the short action version. FCXP means it has a detachable mag ("C") and "P" means the package with the scope. The scopes usually work o.k., at least at first, but they aren't top of the line by any means. The package rifles don't have the Accutrigger, which most people find a desireable feature though a few don't care for them. The conventional trigger is adjustable, just not easily user-adjustable like an Accutrigger. If you get a Model 11 or 111 not as a package you can get it with the Accutrigger, but it is a bit more and you might not be able to add mounts, rings, and scope with your $600 budget.

I don't care for the Remington 700, but it is a good design and although the SPS is the low-priced version of the model, the fundamentals are all there. A scope packaged with it is probably not noticeably better quality than the ones packaged with the Savage or any other gunmaker's. Remington's build quality seems to have gone off somewhat in recent years, you hear of more lemons than they would have tolerated when they were the market leader, but if you like the 700 you will probably be happy with it as the vast majority of owners seem to be.

I would suggest you go and handle some of the models you're interested in to see which one feels the best in your hands, then go home and do a little homework on each. Enjoy the process, shopping for sporting equipment is great fun right?

I just got a Savage 111 FCXP3 in 30-06 I like it a lot so far. The scope that came with mine is a Bushnell Sharpshooter 3-9x40. I know it's not the best but it works..

Sell your gift card to someone and buy a used Tikka T3. You won't regret it!
Or save your card for other stuff.
IMHO.

The Axis looks like a good enough package, if you plan on upgrading later i would get the Sav. 111 model. Don`t discount the Vangards either, excellent rifles for the money. Fit of stock to you is most important thing though. Your choice of 308 is good unless your only shooting varmints, i don`t have one any more but it works and ammo is readily available. Have fun and practice when you get it.

I'd go vanguard, 111 or 700... can't really go wrong with any of them.

Vanguards are super smooth and I think the new vanguard 2s are going to be that much better from what I've read. I own the older model and love it. They're a bit heavier but whatever.

111 are accurate right out of the box. However I'd look at upgrading the rings and later when you save some scrilla or get another gift card get some new optics for the rifle. I've found the the bolt to be bit of a ##### to get out. But that's minor details.

And the USMC has used the 700 action forever and it's proven itself. So you can't go wrong there.

Where are you hunting? A 4x scope is a little high on the low end. Could cause problems in tight bush.

Alberta, I have lots of permission on coulee's and prairie farmland, which has some bush as well. It won't be a bush gun full time. Also, is there a major difference between a 3-9x40 and a 3-9x50 scope? Just wondering how big of a difference that 10mm makes.

You'll be able to mount a 3-9x40 down closer to the bore, and your rifle won't look ridiculous. Buy quality and the extra 10mm won't make a difference.

An answer I expected.A little bit of knowledge, can be a dangerous thing. In this case I believe that to be correct.

I have the 700... Love it... The scope in the package is a bushnell banner... I have one on one of my 223's... Works well but not great for low light etc... I'd still buy the remington...

Whatever you choose send me a pm... I have a gift cert for cabelas with about 18-20 bucks left on it you can add to your purchase... No sense in it going to waste here...

I'd rather get a non package and get a better scope. I had a banner that made it 2 days into spring bear season. The shoulders that the windage knobs sit on came apart of the scope tube. I don't hate bushnell by any means. Just their banner series.

True... but OP has set a limit of 600 bucks.... in this case the package isn't a bad choice... I think the banner would do the trick while he saved his pennies for something better..... would rather see him buy the 700 sps package than the axxis rifle only so he could afford a marginally better scope than teh banner.....
