Sorry dont have a pic, but I'm wondering which "dash" model this 629 is. Its stainless, rubber grips. Probably 6.5"-8" barrel approx. Has a partial lug, not a full lug. The marking is "629" no dashes or anything. Would this be a first version 629? or is it a later one 629-1,-2,-3,-4 etc, but isnt marked as such? I can try to get pics soon. I found it for sale and I'm looking into buying it. Hope this isnt to vague to get an accurate answer.

Does it have the pinned barrel & the recessed cylinder? If so, it's a no dash made prior to 1982 when S&W dropped that feature. Great .44 but if you want to shoot hot loads or if you prefer a more robust .44 Mag, I would get a 629-2E (1989) or later dash #. The transitional Endurance Package changes were added to the 629 series beginning with the 629-2E and the blued 29-3E model in 1989. It consisted of a hardened yoke and frame. The 629-3 and blued 29-4 added longer bolt notches, a bolt block and hand changes. All this was to lessen loosening of the guns in heavy use. Worst problem was the cylinder unlocking and reverse rotating upon firing.

Went and looked at it again today, I was wrong, it is a 629-4! Ive decided Im going to buy it too.

That's great! All post dash 2E had the Endurance Package from factory. The 629-4 was drill & tap from factory, it was also a transition model, the early ones had the square butt and later had the round butt. The -4 is also when S&W introduced the MIM trigger and cyl. release on the later ones. Some came with all forged parts, some with forged triggers and MIM cyl. release and some with both MIM cyl. release and triggers. The dash 5 had the frame mounted firing pin and MIM hammer along with the other MIM parts.

Sorry, Harry not Henry! But yes, I think what I'm getting it for is fair. Theres about 190 rounds of ammo too, not included with it, but I'm going to negotiate a price to add it in. I'll let ya know what I payed when I post pics and negotiate an ammo deal.

I've owned several 44's but never the Smith 29. Which model 29 should I be looking for? 29-2, 29-3???

Well gents, I finally brought this beauty home last Friday after waiting 6 weeks for the transfer and then for the STATT to come through. Its a 629-4 with an 8 3/8" barrel. I think I did pretty well. I got the revolver with 150 rounds of UMC 240 grain WC and 40 rounds of Winchester 240 grain HSP all for 550 bucks :D

Congrads, that looks like a great deal. the ammo itself is probably about $150 from the store.

I just paid over $1k for a new 4.2 629. It kicks like a mule, i love it :D

Thanks! Yeah I was kinda hoping that I'd come across a 629 with a 5 inch or maybe 6 inch barrel for a good deal, but when this one came up, I had to jump on it. The barrel is a little long, but I couldnt say no at that price. The bore is minty too. Worst case, I could always have it professionally shortened if I really want to. Makes my 6" colt trooper look like a cap gun in comparison.

$550 is a sweet deal, minus the $150 in ammo for a $400 629. I paid double that for my 629-3.

Recoil with the 8 3/8" barrel is very manageable but still stings after a box of factory. Still can't believe all the crazy folks buying the 4.2" half lug; go 500 for recoil, lighter load shoot 357 magnum.
