Which scope for .223 precision target shooting?

One nice thing about a high mag variable is you can turn it down if the mirage is too great to see the target clearly

I'm sorely tempted by the Sightron 45x45 but mirage would be the big reason not to. Maybe that one is more of a rimfire benchrest scope, not for centrefire way beyond .22LR distances needing to see the target beyond the mirage.

The S111 10- 50x is a great scope as Sniffer suggested .

Yes, it is, and I've got one on my F Class rig. Not my only rifle, though, and there's a niche for almost everything.

Not sure if OP is going after 1000 yards soon, and getting there is handload territory in .223, but a scope you can grow into is something you're not going to outgrow anytime soon.

I have owned and sold a few of them, plus an 8-32x which was a good scope.
I just don't enjoy shooting Fclass as much as TR however, so although I have an excellent March High Master I don't use it much

folks, the OP said his range is 100-500m - plinking. Worth staying on point. Offering up suggestions for a tube that belongs on a 1000m F-class or bench rest rig are not really in the scope (pun intended) of the thread.

Take a look at Shepherd scopes. They are amazing when used properly

If you are shooting "precision" you'll also want First Focal Plane.
Why?

So many people mindlessly suggesting FFP without having a clue as to WHY or what benefit a FFP might have on a known distance target range.

WHAT? Posters who don't read or understand the OP and just post their own personal biases is all that CGN has.

I know quite a few shooters that don't go past 500 meters and use the S111 10-50x and the smaller 8-32x.
If the OP can find a used one for a good price there is no reason not to buy one .

Any reason why I should not consider the Arken scopes such as the
4-16×44 — $470 CAD (EPL-4)
4-16×50 — $490 CAD (SH-4 Gen2)
6-24×50 — $510 CAD (EPL-4)
6-24×50 — $530 CAD (SH-4J Gen2)
5-25×56 — $680 CAD (EP-5)
7-35×56 — $800 CAD (EP-5 Gen 2)

I mean, for the type of shooting that I do (100-700), won't they be a good balance between quality/value to price? These scopes do have Japanese glass, FFP, Parallax adjustment and true zero stop.

I have friends who use them and like them, bu I never have so cannot comment.

Hello everyone.
Our gun club has 100-500 yard range and I would like to do some precision target shooting with my .223 Tikka.
Which magnification/Tube size should I consider and why?
I am looking at 4-16 or 5-25, but I am new to this kind of shooting, and I have no clue really.
Feel free to educate me :)
I would go with the 5-35 as you're getting started. The higher magnification will help you fine tune your skills. Given the low recoil of the .223, you will be able see your shots on paper at a distance without a spotting scope.

You did not ask, but I would definitely go MRAD reticle. Calculations are much easier if you stick to metric targets.

I personally have the Vortex Venom 5-25 on both my CZ457 and my Tikka 6.5CR, not too pricey, but good enough for up to 500yd IMO.

I have a couple Arkens. So far they’ve been quite reliable. No zero shifts, track accurately.
The only negative I have with mine is that on the EP8 1-8 there was a chunk of crude visible on one of the edges of an interior lense which is irritating, but undoubtedly would have been resolved by the vendor had it bothered me enough for me to remove it from the rifle.

With the 4-16 EPL that I have, the center dot is quite fine even when illuminated (no washout). At 16x and at 100 yards, you are centering the dot inside a 22 caliber hole.
I’ve shot mine out to 1800 yards or so, and been able to see bullet strikes on rocks.
They are fairly heavy and physically large, but not overwhelmingly so in my opinion.
From what I have seen they are a lot of scope for the money.
