Which Scope for a Lever Gun?

I have a mossberg 464 30-30. I just bought the popular Kwik-Site see-through mounts so I could still use the iron sites close up.

I'll be going deer hunting for the first time ever this November and I'd like to use the 464. I'm just wondering if someone can recommend a good scope for me to buy and use.

I'm thinking somewhere in the range of $500 to $1000. I don't know anything about hunting big game and I know very little about optics.

Advice?

Thanks,
Bill

First thing I'd do is toss the see-through rings. Next, go out and get a Leupold base and a set of low or medium Burris Signature rings with the synthetic inserts. Then snag yourself a new (or used) Leupold VX-2 in 2-7x33. All this for $500 or less.

Then go shooting :)

Anyone tried a 'red dot' or 'holograph' type ( not sure how to describe the group...) of sighting device on their lever gun? I have a 7mm-08 BLR that will be used mostly in old cut overgrowth, with the occasionally possibility of a new clear cut shot, max 200yds. The gun is so nice, light and well balanced, without a scope on it I am tempted to use the iron sights, but my old eyes make it difficult to get a clear sight picture. So I'm wondering if there is something other than a scope that would be lighter but still give some optical advantage over the iron sights...??

Anyone using something they like, or have a suggestion? I've never even looked thru anything other than a traditional scope so not sure where to begin...or just forget about it and go with a compact low powered variable.

Not intending to hijack the post, just a question that I figured is kind of 'on topic'...:)

Aperture or 'ghost ring' sights might be just the ticket for you.

Or find yourself an old Leupold M8 in 4x28/33. So light and compact, you'll barely notice it's there.

I have a Bushnell XLT on my 30-30 lever, it does the job. I picked up a Zeiss Terra 3X 3-12x42 today for $450 - looking forward to sighting it this week.

The VX-"1" 2-7x33 is a great scope for the money, optics are equivalent to the older VX-II and it has the click adjustments rather than the older friction type. The Leupold 2-7 scopes are perfect on leverguns, they're light and have nice compact turrets / ocular bells.
