Which scope for my BLR?

I was tossing around the idea of putting a 3-9x or 4-12X scope on my BLR. it is a lightweight in 7mm08 that I bought new in 2007.

I put a 1.5- 6X Bausch & Lomb on it that I had on another gun.

I would like to get better magnification to 250-300 yards.

Am I nuts to consider the 4-12X? The area I hunt consists of a combination of bush and field.

I have a bushnell 3-9X 3200 elite on my 30-06, but would like to keep it on.

Isn't there a tendency to lose brightness and clarity for a given price point when magnification goes up? I usually find my field of view cramped at 9x anyways.

Vortex Viper in 3-9x40 would be a nice fit on that rifle. with the BLR set up, a 3-9x40 is the biggest tube I would put on. a 2-8x32 would also be a nice compact rig

I had a 2.5-8x36 Leupold VX-III on mine, I wouldn't have wanted anything bigger or heavier as it would ruin the balance.

The VX-III is a little pricy though, a vx-I or vx-II in a 2-7x33 or a Bushnell elite 3200 2-7x32 would be just about perfect for a lot less money.

One thing to look for when getting a scope for a BLR is that the eyepiece diameter is reasonably small so it doesn't get in the way of your thumb getting to the hammer as you can't get a hammer ext. for the new BLR's.

This is my BLR in .358 Winchester...

That is one of the old Leupold 2x7 Compact scopes in a set of Warne rings. The 2x7 has been good enough for an elk and an antelope each at over 300 yards and at the low end it works fine in the bush, so that power range is pretty flexible in my opinion. I like the nice clean, classic lines of the Leupold scopes, but that's just me.

The Warne rings are pretty nice as well. For a day of work in the bush, picking huckleberries, etc, the scope comes off in seconds and an Ashley rear aperture goes on. Just the ticket for grumbly bears in the thickets, if push should ever come to shove.

Rick, your set up is about perfect IMO. Can't understand why anyone thinks they need 12x magnification for deer hunting with a lever action 7-08. To each his own, but opinions were asked for...

3 of my rifles wear the 4x12x40, but they're 308s and i only got them when the 3x9 wasn't doing it anymore- old age at 300 yards ain't pretty-

I use 3x9x40 Leupold scopes on my BLR's. The eye pc on Leupy's are one of the least bulky available and by far the purrrrrdiest in my eyes. I like my scopes mounted super low and there is still plenty of room to operate the hammer.

I wish the Warne rings were a bit lower, and I wish the rings didn't have the tab at the top. Small niggly things. Other than that, it works. Particularly for my wife, who basically confiscated the rifle for her own years ago...

When the early variables came out, I went from a very early Weaver K4 to a Leupold 3x9. Still have that scope, and wish I could still get them without the duplex reticles that I have no use for...

Then I went through my "bigger is better" phase and and some 4x12's. Nothing wrong with them, and you don't HAVE to turn them up to 12x but it is always there, and 4X at the low end is what I had been hunting with since I was a little kid and graduated from peep sights (which in later years I started using a lot more... go figger).

But the 4x12's were a bit heavier, definitely a bit bulkier, and I felt the 3x9's looked a little classier on my Sakos and Husqvarnas anyways.

So the high powered variables went, with the exception of the 6.5x24 which isn't a big game scope anyways. They were replaced by two of the full size early 3x9 Vari-X II's, and three 3x9 Compacts and two 2x9 Compacts. The compacts were all bought through Premier Reticule when they first came out, and the very nice gentleman there put in plain crosshair reticules to my specifications before shipping them to me.

I've really never looked at anything other than the Leupolds (except for the Falcon Menace that just arrived in the mail here five minutes ago). I'm sure there is optically superior glass out there, etc and so forth. But you don't use a scope on a hunting rifle for spotting, etc. It's basically up to the aim, get your sight picture, and shoot. In my opinion you don't need uber high end glass beyond the Leupold level for that. My Leupolds hold their point of aim, they're tough, and the one I did manage to make N/S was fixed by Leupold without question and in a very short time.

Looks... repeatable accuracy... dependable... tough... lifetime guarantee... can't beat that with a stick.

I'm going through the "why can't I see anymore" stage as well. I'm not an optometrist, but changing prescription as you age shouldn't be an issue for most people, I don't think. The magnification is still the same, clarity of the image is what I would expect to be the problem, just like the front sight now shooting with irons.

I have had to adjust the ocular lenses on my scopes to compensate for my eyes betraying me, as well as the diopter settings on my DSLRs, etc and so forth. It might be worth it for you to give that a try as well on those older scopes.

i know what works for me-a 4x12- i used to work for wild/lietz, so i'm not your average scope user- most of my shots come at 250 yards plus anyway, and my scope is an old scopecheif with bdc and range finder- it stays on 10 most of the time, but i'll switch up to 12 if i need to see what's beyond 300

What do these scopes run for?

I will likely get a 3-9. forget about the 4-12 guys. Its a stupid idea.

I use a 1.5x6 Bushnell 4200, i.e. B&L for my BLR ,but it is a 450 Marlin calibre. My other rifles use 4.5x14 and 4x16 for longer shooting due to the fact that my 57 year old eyes aren't what they used to be. If you decide to get rid of the B&L I know someone who will buy it. Karl

I'm a big fan of scopes in the 2-7x32 range. They're light, compact, plenty of magnification for any distances I'll be shooting. I just put one on my 7mm-08 mountain rifle.

I am keeping the B&L.
