Scope Question
I faced the same question for my 7600s. I went with the lower powered scope.
So, in my VERY humble opinion: I made the selection based on size/weight and the all important fact that the lowest power possible suits me best while hunting the thick bush of Ontario, aka: lowest power usually = largest field of view.
The extra power is nicer on the range for sighting in, but animals are not hunted at the range.
The VX II vs the VX III was the biigger question I faced. I ended up with both: 1 for the .308 Police, and 1 for the .30-06 carbine.
The VX III has slightly better glass, but also increases the power slightly at the lowest adjustment. The VX II has a bigger field of view but the eye relief seems to change more dramatically than the VX III when the power ring is changed. If one were to weigh out the difference in cost between the VX II vs the VX III and then factor in that you will need to spend $200 more to buy the VX III, and then realisitically consider the actual amount of time one actually "looks" through the scope, the VX II may make the most sense. Most folks won't be able to discern between the two scopes wrt to glass quality in the field.
Both scopes are reliable, durable, and of sufficient quality that one can use them well past the legal shooting time of 1/2 hour before to 1/2 hour past sunset.
Personally, and putting money aside as NOT the issue in this particular decision, I'd suggest going with the VX II for the greater field of view and the slightly lower power. The greater variance in eye relief on the VX II does not impact me in the field since I only use the lowest power during hunting, and I have lots of time at the bench to adjust my head/eye position.
