I am looking to start doing some precision shooting. For my first kick at the cat I'm trying not to break the bank and not end up in a basement apartment paying for a house my wife won't let me live in anymore.

I am looking at a Remington 700 VTR and am undecided on optics

First I looked at the Bushnell 4200 Elite 4200

I like it and have used Bushnell stuff before with great success but this came with a significant price tag. I saw it for about 5 and change online.

I have never used BSA but saw it at Basspro for about half of the cost of the Bushnell. The scope I was looking at was MD624x40IR

I'm new to buying precision optics and don't know if I am heading in the right direction. I cant see me shooting past 6 or 700 yards with the rifle I'm looking at...especially with the range I am going to start with.

Any thoughts or alternative suggestions?
 
In optics you REALLY do get what you pay for.
Long range precision and ultra tight budget just don't work.
Of the 2 hands down the 4200 is the only real option, but you will find if you get serious about precision shooting you will quickly out grow the 4200 and be looking at much more expensive optics.
 
You could give the Falcon a try. It won't break the bank and we have well over 300 more than satified customers, most of them from CGN!!

Comparisons with the Bushnell vary depending on the person, but we have had great success with these scopes and have never had a complaint about quality or clarity.

Probably for the first time, I am going to have to disagree with Rick on this one. You don't HAVE to spend huge money to get quality optics that are going to last you a long time. In most cases you do get what you pay for. In this case, you get quality optics for a fraction of the price. There is no doubt that $1500-2000 optics are going to give you better clarity, but is it $1000-1500 worth of clarity? Depends on your budget I guess.
 
Buy a used scope off EE Has been my recomendation for the last little while. I like the bushnell tactical series. They will get you going for a decent price. I havent tried a Falcon. I recently bought a Night Force and yes there is a huge difference in price but there is a huge difference in quality. But I was just like you. I wanted to get started and could not justify spending huge dollars. Nor could I afford to at the time.

I think you should pick up a bushnell and get some good time behind the gun. Learn everything you can and then you can better judge your needs.
 
My buddy has a Falcon 4-14 FFP and it tracks nicely.. optical quality isn't the greatest but for the price it is hard to beat... I have a Nightforce 5.5-22 and it is heads and tails above the Falcon.. But it is also 4X the price...

I have a 4-16X50 4200 and am not really impressed with it.. it doesn't track really well.

I would recommend the Falcon if you are on a budget as you say...
 
I suggest that if you are serious about long range shooting then build it right the first time. I bought a good rifle and cheaper optics to start and I wish I didn't. Save your money and invest in good glass that will last you a lifetime.
If you must get a cheaper scope then out of what you suggested I say the 4200.

i got and love my Bushnell 6500 2.5x16-42. Picked it up on the EE and saved some money. I suggest if you can go to a local gun shop on a cloudy day and look through some different price ranges and you will see the difference in low to high end optics. You will be able to see the difference and may a better choice you will be happy with for longer than just a couple months.
 
BSA vs. Bushnell - like a volkswagon compared to a porche! Like the guy earlier said, you get what you pay for , as most things in life! Most guys buy in reverse, a quality rifle and a five cent scope and rings!

Yea, i was talking to a guy at work who pretty much said for precision shooting go Leopold or not at all. He said the problem with Bushnell is that they have issued with coming back to zero once you have made numerous adjustments.
 
Please do yourself a favour and pass on the BSA - I bought one (6x24x40) from Basspro and I've honestly seen better build quality on a garden shed, not only won't I sell it I would only give it away with the caveat that it is a POS! The Elite 4200 series scopes are my personal favourites since I can't justify Leupold/Nightforce etc but I also own and like the Elite 3200 and the Falcon Menace line both of which are quite a bit less that the 4200 series.
