I am coming to the realization that my shotguns are the most used of all my guns. I have all the fun toys like handguns etc but find that my shotguns are brought out most often. I shoot everything from trap/skeet to waterfowl and upland game. Up until now I have always used my trusty Remington 870 in 12 gauge. But I am looking to upgrade to a semi-auto for around the $1200 mark.

Since I use the shotgun the most I want it to be a nice one and it must be able to perform all of the above tasks.

So far I have been looking at the Benelli Vinci and Remington Versa Max as my top two picks. Generally I only use 3" shells for waterfowl as I feel 3.5" is more than what is needed.

My question to you fine gentlemen here is of the two I have mentioned which would you choose and why? Or would you choose something else all together? If you have any other suggestions please let me know.

Thanks in advance!

I can't add much on your choices as personally I don't like either

I'd go beretta browning or baikal possibly a CZ for semis. Remingtons quality is slipping hugely. And I hate benellis I find them to be a 1 load gun. Good luck with your search

I've heard a lot of good things about the Versa Max. I'm actually saving up for one unless something better pops up in the meantime.

Thanks for the input guys, would you be able to tell me more about the Sx3 and why you recommend it over the other options?

Sherlock excuse my ignorance but what is the benefit of having no return spring in the stock? Also would you recommend the extrema over the vinci?

Thanks again guys!

Sx3 is a amazing gun the only semi I prefer over it is the Benelli super sport. But there is a big price difference between the 2 and not enough benefit for the Benelli I would go with the sx3 I've shot and owned alot of semi's and I shoot the sx3 the most.

I use an extrema 2 for all my shotgun needs(bit long for woods work, but isn't too bad) This is an awesome gun. as long as you remember to clean the gas ports it will shoot anything from light target loads to heavy goose or buck shot loads of any brand(that I have tried).

recoil is light...target loads are like shooting a .22.

throw on a patternmaster extended range choke and I'm wacking geese from a long ways away.

its probably a bit more money than what your looking for, but you might find a used one.

Its worth the extra money for sure.

Not sure bout all these fine gentlemen, but out of the two, the Vinci as I don't care for
Remington products.
But, the big but, I would take a gander at the Browning Maxus before I chose the Benelli Vinci.

A good used Remington 1100 is a fine shotgun. The older model 1100 in 3" mag will only take 3" shells. They are nice shotguns and can usually be bought in very good used condition for $500 and under, but the 3" mag is a little harder to find than the 2 3/4".

Beretta if you prefer gas operate ( easier on your shoulder ) otherwise Benelli but if you want a work horse around $500 get a MP153 ( its a 3.5", cheap and never fail ).

You might be able to find a used Benelli Super Sport or Sport II in your price range. Amazing Shotguns. If Claybuster was here he would probably say they do not shoot target loads well. He would be wrong.

What are your guys' thoughts on the Beretta Urika AL391?

Got a urika last year and extremely happy with it. This is my first semi so I did alot of reading before buying. I was leery with everything I read about semis cycling light loads, kinda why I went 3". The price of them is coming down as well with the a400's out.
