Which semi auto ?

No question the all-steel SuperX-1 is/was a very well made gun, and yes, quite a few had some nice wood.

Mine (and a gunning partners) functioned well-enough for targets, with minimum maintenance, but was several times disappointing when waterfowling during the wet and cold. The Berettas keep on going in weather that would quickly render the X-1 a single shot at best !

If you can find one,..Beretta made a field gun back in the early 1990's called a model 1201F. It was an inertia system, and stayed clean for many rounds. Basically the same as the Benelli, but I liked the look of the Beretta a little more. Nice gun. Came with chokes, and stock spacers, too. It would have looked even nicer if they made it with wood stocks, but the synthetic was all they had. Still pretty nice though.

Yes I agree for the most part. The OP only wanted the best semi for shooting clays recreationally to an old school shooter like me that is a x1 with choke tubes fitted, if you like a heavy well made gun if not a 391 for sure. On duck hunting it is the browning gold or maxus I wouild take or a 391 but not because the x1 is going to become a singler shot but because it is not made for 3" steel. take care

Beretta 391, love mine, have put 300 rds through it in a day with no issues, recoil is soft and i dont find cleaning it that bad, but thats me who kinda likes cleaning a gun or two in the evening.

Go Italian

I am leanning towards the new beretta A400 xtreme in black synthetic. The gun seemed to fit me good at the store. They only had the cammo version though. This may just be my next " do it all " shotgun.

You should have just asked me in the first place. Head into
Vancouver to the bigger stores that have the best selection. Close your eyes and bring up the gun to a comfortable cheek weld, open your eyes and see how it lined up. Some will definitely fit better than others. However, keep in mind, most models mentioned come with shim kits to adjust for slight offsets. After that, buy the Benelli SBE or M-2 and you can thank me later. They both come with shims, and shoot anything you can feed them.

So you're a Benelli lover eh...... No love for the Beretta Xtreme ?

I keep hearing the Benelli's kick harder v.s. a gas operated gun and dont cycle light 2 3/4" shells reliably.

I can see the Benelli apeal for guys that are too lazy to regulary clean their guns though.... ;) lol

Soon as a guy thinks he has his mind made up on what gun to buy......
all the opinions come out of the wood work. "ohhhhhhhhhhh jeeeeez...... you shouldn't have bought that one"

hahahahahahah I love it......

Once you put your big boy pants on, you won't even notice the recoil of the Benelli. Mine worked fine with even 1 oz light handloads once broken in. Also for the money, you get a fibre optic front sight and a mid bead. Beretta's seem to leave out those little items on the models I looked at. Of course now you will go get a Beretta just to be different. Haahahaha. You need to get them on your shoulder to decide. You can change sights easily enough, but the Gas thing is well .........

NEVER MIND I SEE YOU ALREADY BOUGHT THE BERETTA. I KNEW YOU WOULD.

Yup,I love it,too! All those "BIG boys" ...If you can't stand recoil, don't shoot shotgun (or maybe 410) Laugh2
"What you need is..." a bulls**t post, the only good ones were talking about how the gun fits, seriously.I'm probably getting flamed for this, but I blast clays with an old Browning A5,and if its getting serious "aka" competition;I'll use my old SxS...I'm used to her and the looks you get if you are busting clays at the same rate like a 3000$ gun with an old 250$ beater...priceless!Just an opinion of a 5'6" small frame guy in his fourties...

The proof is in the pudding, someone once said! I got my 391 Gold Optima Sporter in 2003. It has NEVER been cleanned. It has had a Break-Free treatment of all metal parts before any actual shooting. It has had several aditional drops of Break-Free in the action and on the barrel if the weather was off. Since I got a DT10L, it is and was always relagated to hunting and with the DT10l there, to bad weather shooting. I did not do a round count on this 391, but my 390 did 25024 rounds with only 20 FTF and no cleanning!

The 391 has gone through major rain storms of inches per hour, -20C weather, snow storms and will still drop empty hulls interchangeably in the same location whethr 2 3/4 dram target laods or max 3 inch steel. Here are pictures of the first time that I openned it up since 2003. BTW, I did not clean nor ad anything since last month:

Please find my ANY other shotgun out there that can go through this!

Henry, I gotta tell you, that's one dirty gun. My 391 never gets that dirty. After every shoot I wipe it down but have never cleaned it thoroughly. Over 4000 rounds now and no malfunctions. Great gun, worth every penny.

That's disgraceful. You would be the last person I would buy a "used" gun from.

Not how I would maintain one ... but a great testament to the fact that
the 391's will take a lickin' and keep on tickin'. Crud that would stop a lot of other
guns long before they got that crusted & grungy !

I shoot a benelli cordoba. Have a few of them. Have a couple 100/100's with them, very slick guns that keep going pretty much no cleaning. Im sure it could run as hard as the above 391 without cleaning but I didnt really set out to prove any endurance reccords or anything.

Once you scrape and remove all that "crap" I would be willing to bet you will find pitted metal. Nitro powder is "non corrosive up to a certain point.

It's not Rocket Science clean your Guns after you use them.

CLP is great stuff. Perhaps another reason that 391 has kept going despite that kinda crud build up.

LOL! Henry, your other guns must cringe at the thought of having this guy stand next to them inside the safe. :D
